Alternate styles - May 12th 2009, 04:28 PM

So yeah, last week my wonderful Gothic full length trench coat came through the post with shiny zippers and all, and well I started to wear it and I noticed people staring at me and stuff.

It doesn't bother me, even when people comment on it.

But I was just wondering if anyone who dressed in an alternative (like from "normal") style ever been harassed/prejudiced against at all?

Also whether you dress in more "normal" clothes in order "fit in" better.

I wear what I want.
I don't feel the need to copy/wear similar styles to other people in order to 'fit in'.
It's got me a few funny looks or stupid remarks, but to be honest, i'd rather stand out for having some sense of individuality.

I wear these shoes a LOT (i'm wearing them now actually )

and people love to shout 'Moo' at me. Well, i'm sure i'm not the one that looks the most stupid when that happens. Some people...

Re: Alternate styles - May 12th 2009, 04:46 PM

I usually don't dress "normal". Bright clothes, bright makeup, big hair, consume made converses that look like a two year old made them and sometimes non matching. I get looks, Ive heard comments and I don't care. Sometimes I even say thank you. Not to mention I get really scary and threatening looks from the black members at my school because I put the word ballin on my shoes.

Just got to think like this. At least you don't fit in the box where its so crowded and not to mention you don't care what others think at least you have the balls to be different. Thats what I think.

I get a few stares now and then, but I'm used to it. Hell, a lot of people know and refer to me as 'the girl with purple pants.' I'm cool with it. The most stares and comments I get are usually when I'm with a group of friends, because we're quite a, well, flamboyant group.

Re: Alternate styles - May 12th 2009, 05:06 PM

I get the weirdest look for walking outside with no shoes on.
I do what I want, I'm rather hippie-ish, hence the no shoes.
Also, I'm tall, so when I wear a mini skirt it looks twice as short on me... the looks I get!

I love to customise, which turns a few heads. But if you love it, do it. Who cares? I met a lotta folk through people commenting, good or bad, on what I'm wearing.
People judge cause they don't have the confidence to pull it off, so be glad that you do [:

I wear what I want.

But I used to wear black nail polish in year 8 at school, and I used to get called a goth. The idiot thought I'd take it as an insult. I didn't really see it as an insult, but it upset me that someone was so closed-minded and that they wanted to upset me.

I dress however I feel on the day or whatever clothes I can find that aren't in the wash, my mum takes ages to wash my clothes I swear some of my stuff has been in the wash basket for months. Anyway I've not personally been harassed coz of the clothes I wear but several of my friends have.

Re: Alternate styles - May 12th 2009, 11:02 PM

I just wear whatever I want. If I like it and it's appropriate for where I'm going(I don't mean sexually appropriate, I mean like how you wouldn't wear sweats to a job interview) I'll wear it. Haha I had a really funny conversation with this guy who was trying to make fun of me once. I don't really dress massively "alternative" but some things that aren't "normal". This incident I was wearing my cowboy boots(They're actual cowboy boots, I bought them for horseback riding). They're really pretty and black and red.

Anyway:
dumb kid: Why are you wearing cowboy boots?
Me: why not?
dumb kid: why?
Me: Why not?
Dumb kid: Why?
Me: Why not?
Dumb kid: JUST WHY
Me: Why not?
Dumb kid: GRRRRR.

Sometimes I paint my eyes black, with black eyeliner, my black thick rim glasses, and some black clothes.

Sometimes I wear a dress, blush, brown eye shadow, and silver flip flops.

You should wear what you like, no matter what people say. That coat frankly sounds awesome, so keep wearing it!

It's actually strange to think people would think wearing a trench coat is weird, or even those cool shoes Stephanie posted. At my school people dress in stuff like that, or weirder, every day.

I've always wore jeans pretty much year round until about last month. I've heard the word "whore" thrown around with my name. I don't get it. My shorts aren't even that short. Back when I dyed my hair, I would hear crap about that too. But whatever.
I'm happy with what I wear, and thats all that matters.
Some of my friends wear trench coats, and other non-normal clothing and yeah, people talk about them all the time. But they don't care either.

Basically, people are always going to talk.

Re: Alternate styles - May 13th 2009, 01:39 AM

I am very strongly of the philosophy that clothes should be fitting and flattering, and that everyone should have a few clothing "statements" that are theirs that they can sorta work their wardrobe around.

I officially don't give a damn about how other people look, but if I'm going to complain about your dress, it'll usually be the fit of your clothes, not the style, that'll I'll take issue with. Or if it looks like you aren't working with the style you're choosing. If you're alternative but you dress well and it makes you look good, job job. If you're a fashion sheep and you just follow whatever type of trend just because and it looks bad, well, then it looks bad, you know? Has not much to do with alternativeness.

I agree with St Vincent! As long is it flatters your body shape, it's fine

I personally dress in whatever I want. One day I'll be wearing tie dye and jeans, the next corsets with those 'Tripp' pants, complete neon-rainbow gear, or flowy mini skirts with tank tops. I like mixing it up a bit.

In eighth grade, I won't lie, I went through a all black, heavy eyeliner phase and got a lot of teasing for that.... But now that I've found myself I'm not set on one particular style...I love it! The comments and smirks don't get to me anymore.

Re: Alternate styles - May 13th 2009, 04:32 AM

I was a vampire for Halloween, and I wore goth pants. So one day I decided I'd wear them out to the movie theater + the mall, since in my opinion they're extremely stylish. Later on I actually saw a girl wearing the same exact pants as I'd been wearing. I even got complimented by a total stranger who liked my goth pants. I think there's actually a lot of people who do wear alternate clothing, so I have no idea why they seem to be judged by people who don't. While there are a lot of people who will judge people who wear their own styles, there are also a lot of people who will think people are crazy for wearing what's "normal," so it happens on both sides of the line. But you should wear what you want, anyone who judges you because of it needs to grow up.

I do agree with St. Vincent, though. Tight clothing is... gag me

Yeah this is great, I just wante dto see what others experienced, I mean it doesn't really affect me because I knew that it was different, I mean I don't think I would wear it if I Wanted to be normal, a goth coat in the middle of the very urbaised soutth east london ^_^
It is also good to know that other people have their own individual styles... woo for individuality

Re: Alternate styles - May 16th 2009, 04:08 PM

I guess you could say I dress "alternative". I don't usually wear anything over-the-top and outrageous, but- well, I guess you could say my style of dress is influenced by rock music; that is, lots of black. I have "normal" clothes, too (I'm about to graduate from a private high school that had a dress code).

Once, I went to the mall, and I was wearing black bondage pants and a band shirt. I was probably also wearing heavy black eyeliner. I remember walking through a department store, and I could tell that the employees seemed to be keeping a pretty close eye on me... as if they expected me to steal, or something.
