I honestly feel ugly - December 28th 2016, 04:27 AM

I wasn't really sure what category to post this in. Basically I'm a girl and I'm 16. I really don't have a lot of self confidence. I'm just not happy with the way that I look. I want to be one of those girls with cute clothes and makeup, but I don't even know how to put makeup on and my mom doesn't care to help me with it. This summer I cut my hair myself, it's grown back a little ways but is still really short so I'm wearing a wig. Everyday I go to school I'm scared it'll fall off or something, I haven't even told any of my friends it's a wig or anyone at my work. Today I went with my friend and I shopped for a cute outfit and we got our nails and eyebrows waxed. When I got my eyebrows done the lady gave me a funny look and said "is that your real hair?" Right in front of my friend and everything. I nervously smiled, stunned that she would ask that and quickly lied saying "yes" before i tried to change the subject. But she pressed on, saying oh wow I thought that was a wig! She made it clear that she didn't believe me. By then my friend just gave me this weird look and I just wanted to curl up in a corner and hide. It was pretty embarrassing and shot down a lot of my confidence. Then the lady began talking how it's noticeable that I tried to do my eyebrows myself which made me feel worse. I don't know, I guess I'm not a normal girly girl. I'm pretty boring, I bought a ton of makeup but I'm too nervous to even try to put it on myself because I figure it'll look bad. I have a job but it'll still take a long time to get more clothes it seems like. I just honestly feel really ugly, I want to change myself. Has anyone else felt like this?

Re: I honestly feel ugly - December 28th 2016, 12:18 PM

I read this and thought that my younger self could've written it! Yes, I felt like that for most of my teen years.

My mum doesn't wear make-up, and I had no-one else to help me either. Do you think you could ask your friend for advice on putting on make-up? Or have a 'girly' day and do make-overs for each other? It might be a fun of experimenting what suits you and how to apply make-up. Also, you can always watch tutorials online. It might be worth starting with minimal make-up first, or natural colours so that if it doesn't go to plan, it won't be so noticeable. There are also loads of 'school make-up' or beginners tutorials that you could check out too as these are often less noticeable.

I'm sorry that the lady that did your eyebrows questioned you about your hair being a wig. I can only imagine how uncomfortable that would've made you feel. Perhaps when your hair grows back, you can have it cut at the hairdressers rather than doing it yourself? You can also look online or in magazines for hairstyles that you like, and take the picture with you so that the hairdresser can try to style your hair in a similar way.

As for the eyebrows, I think many people feel insecure about them. Many people do their own eyebrows and it can be hard trying to get it 'right'. I'm sorry that you lost your confidence with everything the woman said. But remember that you are young and it does take practice to get the techniques right, and you shouldn't feel bad for that.

I know this is really clichéd, but clothes and make-up don't define who you are. They can help to express yourself, but it doesn't matter whether you are girly or not. Try accepting yourself for who you are, and pick certain aspects that you really like about yourself (whether that's your appearance, personality or talents) and remind yourself of them daily. It may seem strange at first but it can help to boost your confidence.
