Going to Rome... help me! - January 12th 2010, 04:47 PM

So in February I'm going to Rome for a week for a class trip.
Our dress code is mainly casual, we don't need anything particularly nice.
We're going to be doing a lot of sight-seeing.
However, I don't want to be another person in just like, jeans and sneakers and a top.
Any advice how I can still look cute and be comfortable?
Also, what's the weather there generally? I want to know what I should get when I go shopping.

Rome doesn't really have a dress code, either. People tend to dress stylishly, but there's no reason to try to out-do yourself. In fact, it's the overdressed tourists.. lol.

Black/dark jeans, nice looking sneakers, a simple well-cut teeshirt, and a non-obnoxious or ugly looking bag/backpack will go far. It might be a little cold, so a plain hoodie or sweater. Don't forget a raincoat, or an umbrella.

If you wanted to dress it up a bit, you could wear comfortable flats or boots (don't wear heels.. cobbledness abound!) or switch up the bottom with tights/leggings and a skirt.

I would say that the theme for the pack should be clothes that easily match with each other, fit you well, and aren't too flippant or overdressed. When I last traveled to europe in the winter, I remember wearing black jeans, white shirts, my old weather jacket, red sweater, and my old black bag. If you're going to buy clothes, don't just buy clothes for the trip, buy nice wearable and comfortable pieces you could see yourself wearing back at home, to school and the like.

If you aren't wearing sneakers, make sure they're shoes made for walking. Check out the bottom, how thick is the sole. How well is the top of the shoe attached to the sole. Waterproof? Comfortable foot bed? Nothing sucks more than being in pain from your shoes in a beautiful city like Roma

I am waylaid by Beauty. Who will walk
Between me and the crying of the frogs?

(My PM box is always open.. if I can't help you, I'll find someone who can)

The non-obnoxious backpack isn't an option. We have mandatory tour bags that wouldn't be too conspicuous if they didn't have these giant orange parts.

That was generally my plan: cute skirts, dark jeans, cute tops, a little dressy.
