18th birthday party dress. - July 18th 2010, 07:33 PM

I am looking for a dress for my 18th birthday party. I have ordered this dress in black and blue and in various sizes. I am going to see what they are like when they arrive. I like the blue the most but I am unsure of how the colour will look on me, it might make me look even paler and washed out.
I was just wondering everyone opinions on them until they get here and make my mind up completely.

Also any ideas on what colour accessories for the two different dresses would be great.

I have black wedges and a black bag and a silver bag and silver shoes already so it would be great if I didn't have to buy anything else new.

I'd go with the black and maybe do some red pumps =]

For a necklace... these are becoming kinda popular:

It honestly depends on what you look like. Personally, i'd do black because black is flattering on everyone and always looks extremely classy. Like the person above me said, you could always go with red pumps/lipstick which always looks great with black

I think you should go with the blue one. I think you can see the band better and it really is a great detail.

It would also look good with your black pumps.

I think the blue one. Its clearer and i think it would make you're body shape look better than the black one does xx

Re: 18th birthday party dress. - July 19th 2010, 09:28 AM

The main reason I like the blue one better is because you can see the detail and it is bright and will make me stand out. I don't normally like being the centre of attention but it is my 18th birthday so I want to stand out.

I have quite wide hips and I am a bit worried this dress with make my hips look wider but because it is strapless it widens my shoulders too which should balance it out. What does everyone else think?

I definitely think the blue one. The detail is clearer and it'll stand out more than the black dress. I also think it'll look better because of your hair colour, too.

I absolutely love the dress. Can I borrow it if you do buy it, yes? Thanks! At the moment I reckon the blue one but I think you'll be able to have a much better idea when the dress actually arrives.

blue is more kind of a sparky party kind dress. just the color is really beautiful, royal blue.
and then again, black makes you look skinnier...
and looking on the design of this dress,i say its beautiful...though i don't think you need accessories with it,cause the rest will be plain, right? curly necklaces wont go by my thought. rather a nice short bracelet. and
if blue,wear silver/black
if black,wear gold accessories.
if you are going with a necklace anyway, let it be heart shaped. it will go cutely with it. i can imagine which shoes your going to choose, maybe with a bow on it,very stylish. then everything mustn't be complicated(with the shape and not too much color).

I like the blue one and I think it'll look great on you

Also, blue and silver go really well together so the shoes and bag that you already have would look nice, although blue and black go well together too so if you decide to wear the black accessories then it'll still look good

Re: 18th birthday party dress. - July 19th 2010, 03:30 PM

For jewellery I have white gold earrings I got from my Nan a few years ago and I am getting a silver necklace from Tiffany's off my Mum and Dad for my birthday so I will be wearing that.

My cousin has said she is getting me a nice silver watch and she is taking me to get it in a few weeks to make sure it fits.

That is all I probably wear for jewellery to keep it simple. Also the silver and white gold will go with the black and blue dresses.

For shoes and bags I think both black and silver will go with both so I will probably pick the most comfortable since I don't want blisters to ruin my birthday

When they get here I will post pictures of me in both dresses. They should be here on Wednesday or Thursday.

the blue, because it will stand out and it goes nicely with your skin and hair color, then get all silver shoes, earrings, necklace, bracelets. etc.

I'd say Blue. If you're afraid of looking more pale, Black will do that more than Blue will. And the other good points others brought up.

Re: 18th birthday party dress. - July 22nd 2010, 11:00 AM

They came today!!!
I ordered a few sizes and 1 size fits me perfectly so I am so happy about that because I am always between sizes.
I was worried it would make my wider hips look wider and it really doesn't so I am so happy with the fit.

I am a bit torn between to two colours now. The blue is exactly like it is in the picture and I just love it but the black looks more grown up and sophisticated.
I took some pictures to help me decide and in the pictures I look paler in the black dress and you can't really see the detail.

(The postman knocking to deliever these dresses woke me up so I look a mess so I hid my face here)

The ruffles on the bottom are a bit squashed from being folded and stuff when delivered so I have hung them up to let them fall and settle.

Right now I really like the blue more but I keep changing my mind so I am going to see what my Mum thinks when she gets in but I do think it will be the blue one.

From the pictures I liked the black but now you've got them I think I prefer the blue.

However black IS very classic and classy and can be worn to pretty much every occasion and I do like the black a lot...

Ah. I'm no help. I like them both

Re: 18th birthday party dress. - July 22nd 2010, 02:57 PM

I kept the blue
When we returned the others to the shop all the staff loved the blue and said they would have picked the blue over the black too. Some even said they are going to get it when it comes in store

My Mum was no help and she liked them both too.
We decided the on the blue just because it is different and it stands out a bit more. It is my birthday and I wanted something bright and colourful.

I ended up going with my gut reaction.
I liked the blue first online and when I opened the bag I liked the blue first, tried it on first and loves it and when I put the black on it didn't feel the same.

The blue looks really nice with my hair and it is a similar colour to my eyes so it makes them stand out a lot where as the black makes me look pale...

I tried black and silver shoes with the dress and both looks nice but I think I will go for silver as I am wearing white gold and silver jewellery.

They both look nice, depends what look you're going for. The blue is a bit sweetie girly, the black is more sexy adult.

These are the black wedges I have got, they don't look right with the dress though because of the straw on the heel but it looks ok.
http://www.marksandspencer.com/Peep-...=1-2&rh=&page=

I got my silver shoes 2 years ago for my prom so I can find a picture of them online but I will take one later.

They are a bit like these with the jewels on the toe but with a mid sized heel. Oh and they are peep toe. http://www.newlook.com/shop/womens/s...estSellerScore

I am going shopping at the weekend for the last little bits I need and then I will take a picture of the full outfit.

I was wondering about my hair. My birthday is on a Saturday and my party is that night. I am going to do my own hair as I don't want to spend half my birthday in the hairdressers because I want to spend the morning with my family.
I can straighten it and keep it plain or I can put it in velcro rollers in the morning when I get up and take them out before my party and have it with big soft loose-ish curls, I don't mind walking around all morning with rollers in.
What ever I do has to be able to last quite a while because we are going in to town afterwards.

I would say loose curls but if you want it to last for ages then its easier to have it straightened :S

I'd say loose curls too, it's just a bit more different.

also I have heated rollers but have never figured out how to use them? I must PM you about this

Please do take a picture of your whole outfit and show us! And have a GREAT birthday, your dress does look amazing! You're very pretty!

I have used my Mum's heated rollers a few times but I can't grasp them. I am going to stick with velcro ones for now.

I thought curls might be too much with the dress but now thinking about it, I always straighten my hair so this will make a change.

I think I have everything sorted for my birthday now but I am getting a last few things this weekend so I am going to leave this open for now until everything is definitely sorted and then I will post a picture of the full outfit.
I might end up making another thread in a few weeks with last minute panics though

Re: 18th birthday party dress. - August 1st 2010, 01:18 PM

Thanks for your help everyone. Since I have sorted my outfit I am going to close this. I am going to make a new thread on hair and make up in the next few days

Oh and Elle. It is just in my house, we were going to go to town after but no one has money so we are staying in mine. I am going to be so over dressed but it's my birthday so I don't care.
