Starting college in the fall... -
May 29th 2011, 02:40 PM
So I'm starting my freshman year of college in August, and where I'm going is going to be cold from October-March/April. It's also going to be snowy most of the year.
I've gone to Catholic school my entire life, so I have a FANTASTIC summer wardrobe but I'm seriously lacking in the fall/winter/spring months. I have one pair of normal jeans, a pair of skinny jeans, and a pair of jeggings I JUST purchased. I own maybe five long sleeved shirts, two of which I JUST bought. I have one big, comfy hoodie and one zip-up sweatshirt I JUST bought. I DO have a pair of cute waterproof boots, some Uggs, a great peacoat, scarves and accessories for the cold. I've just spent the last thirteen years in plaid skirts/jumpers, blouses, and polos. Realistically, how much of what types of clothing will I need if I'm going to college in a New England climate? |

Lots of thermals, long sleeved shirts, cardigans, sweaters, and thick leggings! You can layer everything. My friend likes to wear leggings or Under Armour under her jeans when it gets super cold out, maybe it can work for you!
A warm coat is a must. You might want to invest in a thick down coat for the colder weather. A longer coat also covers up your knees! |

Take it from someone who lives in this climate, invest in a good winter coat, you'll get a lot of use out of it, especially if you aren't used to cold and snow. Hoodies are your friends as are long sleeved shirts and jeans. Heavier socks are also good as well as a durable pair of boots. How many you need depends on how often you mind wearing the same things and how often you do laundry.

I'm used to cold and snow.
I have a good winter coat, so that isn't a huge issue. My laundry is free, and I usually do my laundry every week to two weeks. |

Leggings are amazing in the winter, since you can wear them under jeans for warmth. So are like thin long sleeve shirts, cause you can layer them easily under thicker stuff.
Good wool socks are amazing in winter, and plenty of warm sweaters/sweatshirts. I normally make it through the winter, wearing a pair of jeans (sometimes with leggings under if really cold) then like a t-shirt, or just a tank top, and a thin long sleeved shirt, then a thicker sweater and a hoodie, and I am fine through the winter and I don't always need a coat. So pretty much, jeans and leggings, and good long sleeve shirts and hoodies. Also if you get really cold, wool sweaters are amazingly warm. hey, i live in new england!
my favorite winter clothing item has got to be hoodies. you can find some really cool ones depending on what kind of style you have. also, maybe a couple pairs of sweatpants would be good too. i like them to hang around at home in during the winter. but i have some cute ones that ill wear to class if im feeling lazy.
