Ring size HELP?? - September 22nd 2011, 07:10 AM

So I'm buying my best friend this ring: http://www.etsy.com/listing/68192472...-heart-jewelry for her 21st. She has a red swarovski heart pendant that her dad bought her, he recently died and I know she always wanted similar pieces ... and I think it's perfect.
ANYWAY ... I have NO idea about ring sizes. She's an average 20/21 year old British girl. I have no idea if any of that is relevant but can anyone give me a rough size that should fit? I'm not fussy on which finger, except not thumb/pinky, so anyone know what is the best size to guess at the other fingers???
I need to buy it pretty soon for delivery etc, so speedy advice would be super lovely

Re: Ring size HELP?? - September 22nd 2011, 07:26 AM

There really isn't an average ring size for girls of any age. My left hand ring finger is a size 8 and my right hand ring finger is an 8 1/4. Now, I do have hands that are a bit larger (my fiance and I wear the same ring size, strangely enough!), but my mom (who has a similar bone structure to mine) wears a size 6 ring. Girls' ring sizes are pretty all over the place.

A typical ring size to work with is generally a size 7 and they can usually size it up a size or down a half-size (I think that's right?) at a jewelry store.

Pro-tips (aka what boyfriends do to find out ring sizes for their girlfriends):
1. Snag a ring of hers and make an impression in something (like a soap bar) that will hold the shape of the ring. Jewelers can get a size for you that way.
2. Be a goofy friend and trade rings with her to see if you're the same/similar sizes. I used to steal my fiance's ring all the time, especially when I was hinting for him to pop the question - "Oh hey, look, dear! Your rings fit my finger! What size are you? ME TOO!" Bahaha.
3. Take her ring and place it on one of your fingers. Draw a line around your finger where the ring falls. Go to a jeweler and find the size that falls in the same place.
4. Take the ring and slide it down a tapered candle. Mark the candle where it falls. Go to a jeweler and find the size that falls in the same place.
5. Take her shopping and try some fashion rings on together (for fun) and make a mental note of the size that seems to fit best.
6. Get an accomplice who knows or can easily find out her ring size without being suspicious.

Average ring size in the UK is between an L and P which is from US 5 1/2 to around 7 1/2. The only downside to this is that due to it's copper core, it can't be resized, although I guess she could have a clip fitted to it to make it tighter..... You could always ask her - I know it ruins the suprise but it saves hassle.

:3 I work in a jewellery store. Haven't had chance to use the skills recently *flex*.

Just a hop, skip and a jump.

Love the last line - thanks!
I have a couple of girlfriends trying to snoop it out. I was gonna aim for a size around 6-7 if I do have to guess ...

OK I spun her a stupid as story but it got us onto talking about our own sizes ... she said she normally needs a large or extra large ring ... anyone have any idea what that is in acutal sizes? Roughly?

You could always aim bigger, and if it doesn't fit snug, go to sites like ebay.com and you can get cheap ring adjusters. They are small metal bars that wrap around the ring, underneath, so it can't be seen.
