Gothic style -
October 4th 2011, 08:15 PM
my mom doesn't want me to wear gothic clothes. She thinks that all gothic, dark or punk people smoke and do drugs.
She's afraid that I will cover my whole body with tattoos and piercings, do drugs and smoke just because I like wearing black clothes and dark makeup. I told her that I want to change my style and buy some new clothes, but she doesn't listen to me! Once she told me "during your teenage years, you change a lot. You change your style, your ideas, your way to be... almost everything!". The thing that remaind in my mind was "don't tell others to be what they don't want to be, because they're finding out who they really are". But now my mom is doing this with me! She doesn't want me to be who I really am or at least who I think I really am. I know I sound lame, but it's annoying! A lot annoying! Just as people who tease you because you wear original clothes. How can I convince her to let me be who I want? |

I've always found with my mother that compromise worked best. Sometimes you have to give a little to get what you want. Perhaps ask her to go shopping with you, and experiment with different types of clothes and try to find a balance that you both agree on.
Style does not depict who we are, nor what we will do, but it is a form of self expression and sometimes it's not about one style. I know myself that I have a varied style. It ranges from leather/biker to hippie, to classically sexy to Indian with my harem pants. Do you see yourself as a gothic person? Or is it a side of you that you would like to show off, because the two are different. What I would suggest is to broaden your style, pick out some dark stuff, but find something else you like as well, which may appease your mother. Good luck! "Life is pain, anybody that says different is selling something" ~ Fezzik's Mother, The Princess Bride. ♥ "To die, would be an awfully big adventure."~ Peter Pan "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~ The Buddha 14-04-2010. As someone who is Goth (and has been for almost a decade now), I transitioned into it, as to not bring a "shock" to my parents, so to say.
Basically, I'd wear at least 1 item of black every day, before going into all black. For example, blue (or olive green) jeans? Black t-shirt! Black jeans? Purple, or red shirt. You get what I mean? Honestly, I'd say whatever style you want to take on, slowly transition into it, rather than just changing rapidly, and all at once. |

I'm not changing rapidly, I started to wear at least 2 black items last year and at least one 2 years ago... these days I'm wearing only black, grey or dark blue items, so...

Well, maybe do some research on the actual Goth Subculture, and show her that Goths aren't all smokers, druggies, Satanists, or whatever else. If she's informed properly, she may change her mind on that.

Julz has obviously got it bang on
Maybe start experimenting with dark make up? I'm a bit rubbish with this as i'm not a Goth, nor was I ever one ![]() But does the smokey eye look any good on Gothic girls? That looks good on any culture so give it a go ![]() What hair colour are you? I'm sure white blonde will look just as awesome on a Gothic girl! Defy the stereotype! xx |

I'm the classic mediterranean girl, quite chubby, with tan skin, dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.
I will try a darker makeup (if I have time in the morning) and maybe I should follow Julz suggestion. Thank you! It will be pretty hard to convince my mom, but I always say "no harm in trying"

Of course there's no harm in trying! There is also definitely no harm in showing your mother that you're not some druggie freak, but someone who admires dark fashion.

Julz is right. Researching everything would probably be the best way to go. If she does say no though there is things you can do to your clothes to make this fit your style. For example you could dye your clothes black or grab a white tee and some scissors, go online, find a youtube tutorial to like cut skulls in it, then you can wear it
over a black shirt. There pretty cute. |
