Black tie events -
November 28th 2011, 12:14 PM
I want to go to a ball at uni, which has stated it's a black tie event. The only dress I have with me is fairly short (just above my knees) but it's black and lacy and could pass as semi-formal
Is it worth getting a longer dress (since I'm not too keen on spending money on that kind of thing) or should I go in the one I've got? I don't think they'd kick me out for not being precise, but it would seem polite to follow the dress code.
Maybe it's not my weekend but it's gonna be my year.
It's perfectly fine to be a happy individual. Take off at the speed of sound... |

Any kind of dress here would be okay, as long as there weren't any cut outs or low cut dresses. Since the dress is semi-short, you may want to be careful though.

I wouldn't advise wearing a 'could be' semi-formal dress to a black tie event, it's slightly rude above all else. I know spending money isn't good, but surely it's worth buying a formal dress? I'm sure there will be other events that you'd be able to wear it to so it could be seen as a worthwhile investment.

If it's the one you were saying about, it probably wouldn't be appropriate. You could scour the charity shops and see if you can find something? According to Wiki "Women's dress for black tie occasions can vary to a much greater extent, ranging from a cocktail dress that is at or below the knee to a long evening gown, determined by current fashion, local custom, and the occasion's time." Take a look in charity shops and New Look for a cocktail dress?
