To dye or not to dye? That is the question. - August 1st 2016, 11:02 AM

Recently I've been debating whether or not to dye my hair. And if I do choose to, should I dye my whole head or just the ends? Or maybe even just a streak? I'm leaning more towards dyeing it, than not, but not my whole head. Maybe just the ends. Any tips? Also, I'm 13. Am I too young to dye my hair?

Hey there,

I don't think 13 is too young to dye your hair if you want to! I'd suggest maybe starting out with a semi-permanent dye and perhaps just doing the ends for your first go though. At least that way, if you don't like it it will fade after a few washes, or you can trim it if you can't get the original colour back! Dying your hair is great fun though! I've had my hair dip dyed twice and ombred twice too. It's a really good way to express your individuality, and it's always a great talking point! The only thing you may have to consider is whether or not your school might have restrictions on coloured hair. I know of a few people at my school who dyed their hair interesting colours who were then told to dye it to a more natural colour, so it's just someting to consider when choosing a colour to dye your hair.

If your school and parents are okay with it go for it; if you have long hair you can dip dye and cut the tips off if you go for an unnatural colour your school doesn't allow while you are off (it's summer I assume you are on break). Either way you are 13 you have time to experiment and try new things and hair dying I thoroughly recommend

Go for it! There's not really an age limit to dyeing your hair, and it's really fun and it looks fantastic. I would just do the ends if I were you, because A) if you hate it you can just get it trimmed and B) it's a LOT less work and time to do the ends and C) it won't look weird as it grows out – if you do all your hair then for a few months you're gonna have a few inches of your natural hair color on top, which can look awkward. I did mine blue and then purple, and I would suggest not doing blue since it turns a weird greenish color and i needed to re-dye it like every three weeks. If you pick a color that fades better, like red or pink or purple, you probably only need to do it every month or so.

Good luck

I don't think you're too young! I got highlights and then did streaks when I was younger than you. I would start off with streaks or tips before you go to doing your full head. If you have long hair, you can just do the tips and if you hate it, it's easy enough to get them trimmed off. I got my tips done black once and I got them trimmed off before I even left because it did not look good on me.

I would also check with your school rules about what colours you're allowed to use (if it has to be a "natural" colour) because my school, we could only die our hair natural colours.

Good luck and have fun!

Definitely go for it! Just check the regulations at your school and also make sure your parents are ok with it. But other than that go for it! I would agree just start with the end in case something goes wrong, but have fun with it! Good luck!
