I hate my hair! The red is washing out! - July 21st 2009, 07:55 PM

How can I keep red hair in my hair as long as possible?

Someone save me from myself...

Get shampoo and conditioner for colored hair. Also washing your hair in cool water is better for the color.

^ What she said

There's a lot of shampoos you can buy for colored hair. Do you have all of your hair dyed red, or just red highlights? You may be able to find a shampoo specifically for hair dyed red, but that would probably only work if your hair is completely red. Also, if you're in a lot of sun, it can damage the coloring, and so can wind. If you get your hair done at a salon, it will probably stay in a lot longer. Most of those products you can buy work worth crap.

Wash your hair as little as possible, when you do wash use very little shampoo and water as cold as you can stand it. Don't use products with alcohol in them or dandruff shampoos [try baby shampoo]. Try not to use heat to style your hair too much, don't expose it to sunlight for long periods of time, try to avoid water with chlorine in it.

As for the shampoos for color-treated hair, I have my debates against that. I bought some shampoo for red hair by John Frieda when I had red hair, now use it on my blue hair with seemingly no difference than my regular shampoo. Maybe they just help color treated hair in general but I'm sure regular shampoo would work just fine.

Every time I try to give up, a little voice called hope says "one more try"

Do you mean a ginger red or a unnatural red? Reds are always the hardest to keep in for me.

+Use Manic Panic if your going for an unnatural red. It WILL NOT kill your hair if you dye repetively, and it looks BRILLIANT in reds.

+Wash your hair in cool water, heat makes your color leak.

+Don't shampoo daily, every other day is good.

+Any shampoo with 'Sulfate" if marked color treated or not, WILL strip the color from your hair. Find a sulfate free shampoo!

+I know some people who mix a bit of dye into their current conditioner (no permanents or mix colors, manic panic and other semi permanents I mean) and leave it in the hair for a few minutes each wash. It revives the color a tad each time.I never tried it, but it seemed to work for a blue haired friend of mine!

This is what i've learned over the years of dying my hair...lol.

Help my little eggiweggs! =D Prease?
