Another hair dye question - April 29th 2011, 10:15 PM

As if I don't ask enough

1. What is the least damaging box dye available?
I'm thinking something by Garnier. I was going to go with Natural Instincts but now I'm thinking about Nutrisse because it will last longer.
2. I want my hair to be dark brown. Should I just go black so it won't fade back to light brown as fast?
3. What is the best shampoo to prevent fading?

Thanks

1. Look for ones without Ammonia in
2. If you go black it might look bad on you if you originally want dark brown. Go for one of the shades called 'darkest natural brown' or similar.
3. I use a wash in wash out colour shampoo when I dye my hair and use it to top up the colour every so often, they're pretty cheap

What brands make those shampoos?

Umm, I'm not sure about brands in the US. Do you have Superdrug there? I get the homebrand of theirs

I'm not sure which brand would be best to advise as you might have different ones to the ones I'm used to in Ireland, but Nice n' Easy can be good to start out with I've found. Don't dye your hair black, unless it's something you've been thinking about for a long time and have had advice about and are prepared to be stuck with for ages. Black will take a long, LONG time to fade ~ most people have to bleach their hair before getting it back to their natural colour after they've dyed it black. Trust me. Plus black suits very few people's skin tones and can be hard to correct.
As for a shampoo, look out for shampoos in the supermarket that are kind to coloured hair; it'll usually say so on the bottle. It's important to keep your hair conditioned if it's been coloured as colour will fade out of dry and damaged hair quickly. (:
