My hair is annoying - May 6th 2011, 01:16 PM

It's either greasy, dry or really staticy (is that a word?)

If I wash it with shampoo and conditioner it gets staticy
If I wash it with only shampoo it's dry
If I don't wash it for 2 days it gets greasy

Any tips? :/

Hai Ceilidh,

Hair can be quite a pain sometimes! It really sucks that you're hair's not listening to you! I've actually had this problem. It took me a while to figure out the problems and why it was happening to me. But here's the solution, don't want to bore you with the whys and whats!

Before you wash your hair, apply some oil to it. If you're not used to oil, that's alright, but the oil helps take out the dirt easily.

If you're using oil on your hair, the first time you put on shampoo, you can use it normally, as you would. If you're not using oil: Dilute the shampoo. Don't put shampoo on your scalp with out lathering it in your hands first. It causes the dryness, when you use plain shampoo. Massage your scalp well with the shampoo to ensure the natural sebum (that causes the scalp to turn greasy) gets washed away.

You don't have to use shampoo twice as it is recommended on many of the bottles. Rinse your hair thoroughly, then use very little conditioner, about the size of a penny or a little more than that, depending on the length of your hair. Dilute the conditioner too, a bit. No matter what happens, don't use conditioner on your scalp. It makes the hair greasy, as you mentioned. Use it only on the shafts of your hair, not necessarily from the roots, but definitely to the tips. Leave it on for a minute then rinse thoroughly till you can't feel the conditioner on your hair anymore and when the water isn't soapy-ish, when you squeeze the water out of your hair. Preferably towel dry your hair.

It is recommended however that you wash your hair every 3 days because the sebum does naturally build up and it needs to be washed out. Each person's sebum secretion is different, so you need to wash your hair according to how much is secreted on a day to day basis.

Hope your hair feels better, and you feel better about it!

Thanks Kaveri <3 Actually, you saying I need a small amount of conditioner makes me think I may be using too much. I use quite a bit. My hair is a little longer than on this picture now:

What kind of shampoo and conditioner are you using? Sometimes its the ingredients that can make your hair dry or staticy.

Hey there.
I'm on the same thinking as Nicole.
I'm curious to know what you're using.

A good rule of thumb is, the more expensive the product, the better it will look on your hair.
Also, make sure you choose shampoo specific to how your hair is, or how you want it to be.
I use aussie shampoo and conditioner. I use the moisturizing shampoo, and the non moisturizing conditioner. I get a nice balance there.

I'm using this at the moment (and the conditioner)

I was using TRESemmé - Deep Cleansing Shampoo/conditioner but stopped using it wasn't working as well.

You're very welcome dear! Lol. I used to do exactly that until, I looked up online when I was having trouble with my hair!

Just remember to use the products that are hair specific and you should be fine. The shampoo you're using now is quite a good one, actually, so there's no need to change it. Ordinarily, you should change your shampoo every six months to ensure no sebum is built up because of the use of the same shampoo. Just as long as you get something that is for your type of hair, you should be great!
