Dying my hair ?? - April 7th 2012, 06:53 AM

I currently have brown hair ( my natural color ) as you would see from my profile picture .....
I am considering dying my hair a very bright vibrant red ( permanent dye ) though i am a bit worried that because i have dyed my hair black before ( at the ends it still abit dark ) that the color will turn into a gross orange color ....?

Also when i grow my roots out it might look really gross ?

I dyed my hair red a year ago and regretted it after about four months. I had to dye it every two-three weeks to keep it looking nice and it was ruining my hair. Unfortunately, your hair will go orange when it fades anyway - even if it's permanent dye. Don't get me wrong, red hair looks awesome and I really loved my red hair, but it was just a pain in the backside.

Also, red dye is really hard to get out of your hair. You'll have hints of red in it for a long time. I still have hints of red in the tips of my hair, even though I've had it stripped professionally and dyed numerous times.

Your hair is a lovely shade from what I can see from your picture and it looks really healthy. Don't ruin it!

My advice would be to go semi-permanent.

It won't turn orange, but the red won't be very vibrant if you don't bleach your hair first, especially since your hair is a medium brown with dark ends. You'll end up with a more maroon or burgundy color.
Charli is right as well, red dye fades very fast and it won't turn into a bright orange but a faded orange color. It doesn't look bad necessarily, just means you won't have the red for more than a week really.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I dyed my hair senior year thinking it would turn out this awesome color. Nope. It was amazing for a day or two, but when I washed it for the first time after dying it, it turned pink! Not exactly the color I was hoping for. I didn't want to spend a ton of money to continue to dye it red, so I let the color fade as much as it could and dyed it a different color.

Your best bet is to go semi-permanent before doing it permanently. Give yourself a chance to see how it will look before doing anything drastic. That way, if you don't like the color, you could always wash it out and try a different hair color
