Piercings and working with food. - September 5th 2010, 12:13 PM

I have my lip pierced and I work at a pizza place making pizzas so I have to remove it. So far, I've only worked two shifts and I removed it before I go in and put it back in when I get back but now it's sore.

Is there anything other then just not putting it back in that I could do to stop it being sore? Someone said use retainers but could I use those if I'm working in food because I don't have to take it out because they don't want me to wear it, it's because of health and safety.

I'm almost positive that when you're working with food you can NOT use the clear ones. It's actually health regulations (at least here) that you can have no jewelry of any kind, piercings, earrings, rings, necklaces. If you're preparing food, you can't wear anything like that. I'm sorry but I don't know about how to not make it hurt. You might just have to keep taking it out. :/

Okay well it looks like you have about three options.

1. Ask if you can use a clear plastic retainer.

2. Simply keep taking it in and out.

3. Let it grow back and then get it re-pierced when it won't interfere with anything.

The fear is that the piercing may fall out into the food. I've heard of people wearing a plaster over their piercing at work, though I don't think this is actually legal it may be worth asking.
Apart from that I don't think there is anything you can really do.

I think some places may allow you to wear a face mask of some sort. So maybe speak to your employers and see what they would suggest you do. I don't think a clear retainer makes any difference because it's still there so the health and safety reasons still apply. Your only other option is to continue doing what you're already doing. Taking it out just before your shift, and putting it back in as soon as possible. Or like was suggested before, just take it out and keep it out. And if and when you can, get it repierced.

In the world of work, many places aren't happy with facial piercings. So now that you're working now, you might want to rethink keeping visual piercings to avoid annoying employers and stressing yourself out about putting it in and out.

Take care

You'll probably have to keep taking it in and out...
Or you might just have to let it heal up.
Otherwise ask about a clear retainer.

You need to clean it when you put it back in
