Belly button, infected? -
April 9th 2011, 01:56 AM
OK so I got my belly pierced at the end of Jan. Had a few issues at first with it being SUPER sore, but it cleared up ok. Just recently it's started having stuff come out, kinda like pus ... still cleaning it every day. Last few days there's been a little blood as well. Only out the top hole, not the bottom. It gets "stuck" a fair bit recently, like scabs over a little, I can clean it fairly easily.
Is blood etc a sign of infection? Especially like 3 months in when everything was fine ... It's starting to get sore again too, but I'm guessing that's from bleeding / extra cleaning and moving it about. You can't move mountains by whispering at them. Well, depends. It may be a little bit infected, but it could be bad too. What colour is the pus? If it's like, light yellow/white/clear, it's just minor, and just needs more cleaning. However, if its darker yellow, or green, or something, it's REALLY bad.
Either way, I suggest you go back to your piercer. |

I moved to Australia ... so can't go back to the piercer, otherwise I would have just gone straight to them cos they're really helpful. And I don't know any reliable places here yet, if it get's worse I'll try look one up.
Umm it's kinda clear/slightly yellowy ... Nothing green though. Should I try a disinfectant / something? Or stick to the cleaning fluid I got from the piercer? You can't move mountains by whispering at them. Take a look at my art here: http://attemptedart.tumblr.com/ |

I've not had my belly button pierced, but I know with my ears I definitely had a bit of pus and blood because I was a bit infected. That said, don't use anything like hydrogen peroxide or and disinfectants because they'll just hurt and be counterproductive because they try to actually heal the hole as opposed to healing around the hole. Keep using what your piercer gave you for a while and see if it gets better.

Actually, there is another solution you could try. Mix some Sea Salt with Warm/Hot Water, and soak your bellybutton in it. Do this like, a few times a day. I'd say anywhere between 2-5 times a day, really, depending on your activities. Like, clean it after swimming, salt it after shampooing in the shower, to make sure you don't have that soap in, clean after working out, etc. You get what I mean?
The solution is usually like, 1/8th of the glass is sea salt, the rest is water. |

Hey
It sounds like a small infection, which anyone can get. Make sure before you touch the piercing you have washed your hands. Navel piercings are pretty easily infected. As Julz said a sea salt solution is the best thing. Use say half a tea spoon of sea salt and boiling water, wait for the water to cool and then clean each hole with a clean cotton bud. Hopefully within a week or two it will start to heal a little more, but if you still have problems then head to a piercer or to the doctor. Hope it all clears up soon. Paige |

I'm going to say that it's not infected. I got mine done on November 6th 2010. I'd be worried if NOTHING was coming out for the first couple weeks. I had, and sometimes still have the same issue, with pus/clear/blood coming out. At one point mine was a tiny bit greenish, but it wasn't infected. It sounds like it's just healing. You aren't supposed to take a bath (only a shower), go swimming a pool OR the ocean, and soak it after exercise for I'd say at least a few more weeks.
I was told to just soak it in salt water for 20 minutes twice a day. I bought my own sea salt and mixed it with warm water...warm the water first and stir salt in. Just enough until you can BARELY taste that it has salt. I was told to do this for the first six months, although I only did it for the first month or two and mine is fine. I changed mine around 4 months, and it was okay but eventually it felt like I couldn't move the piercing around and one day it kind of burst with a ton of the clear stuff and such...but it wasn't infected. I think it was just getting used to having a new one in. If it gets hot to the touch or extremely red or painful then see a doctor but if it's just leaking a little you should be fine. |

Mine did exactly the same thing and I wouldnt say its infected. Mine took ages to heal.
All I did was boil some water, shove a load of salt in with it, put it in a glass and just tip it upside down on my stomach, so it was completely immersed. I also used Savlon wound wash (I cant remember if its antibacterial or antiseptic). Carried it round with me and gave it a quick spray 4 or 5 times a day. Dont worry about it, just keep it clean and eventually it will heal.

Try a sea salt soak. There are instructions on how to take care of piercings on the sticky in this forum. :)
