Having problems with my helix - July 13th 2011, 07:01 AM

Hey. I would prefer advice from a professional piercer or someone with lots of piercing experience, but I'm open to all opinions, questions, queries, outbursts and statements.

I got my helix pierced about 2 months ago and it looks like there is some kind of bump there. It doesn't ooze puss or anything, but when I squeeze it or play with it, it bleeds. sometimes the area gets crusty yellowish clearish stuff but nothing majorly concerning. I called a nurse on our 24 hour nurse line where I live and she said it might just be a minor infection and to keep cleaning it and putting polysporin on it, which I have been doing now for 2 days.

Someone help? I've been trying to upload a picture but it's not fricking working. but it's just a bump around the hole (looks like the hole extends ) on the front part of my ear. not the back.
I have never had a keloid before, btw, and the nurse says she highly doubts it's a keloid. I have had other piercings and this has never happened. I have had 7 piercings, I now just have 6. The first time I got my helix pierced with a gun, this same thing happened kind of but it was on the back, and the post wouldn't allow my ear to swell and so it hurt like a holy crap and so I took it out, then this time I got it pierced properly at a shop with a sterile needle. It's 14 G if that matters.

It sounds like an infection to me. I had the same thing happen with a couple of my piercings, and it went away once I started taking better care of them.

I've found the one who completes me.
This love is like nothing I've ever felt before. <3

I'd say it's most likely a minor infection. Trust me, you'd know if it was a keloid. It's probably just irritated by something. Consider a few things:
What kind of metal is the jewelry? Is it hypoallergenic? If you're not sure, call your piercing place and ask. If it's not hypoallergenic, that may be the cause.
How are you taking care of your piercing? Are you doing non-iodized salt and distilled/bottled water soaks? Are you using a Q-tip with water to clear any crust and junk off?
Why are you messing with it and squeezing it when it's only two months old? Even if it looks like it's healed on the outside, it's not healed on the inside. As your piercer told you, I'm sure, piercings like a helix will take 6 months to a year to heal, usually. Piercings heal from the inside out and you should never poke at it or touch it, especially with uncleaned hands. If it only oozes when you poke at it, you shouldn't be worried. Everything you listed is quite normal for fresh piercings.

I'll see you on the other side.

If you have a bump then it could be a keloid. I have small bumps in my lobes which arent noticable, but are definately there. They can be any size. I'd say continue cleaning it and go see your piercer.

I called my piercer today and she suggested cammomile tea bags twice a day (steep the tea and then use the tea bags to put on the piercing). I'm supposed to go see her in 3 days if it hasn't gone down after that. I guess I need to go get some tea now haha.
