When TeenHelp Is Down - August 3rd 2012, 02:24 AM

Hello, everyone! Some of you have already heard about the website I created a few days ago, but if you haven't, be sure to check it out! It's called, "When TeenHelp Is Down," and here is the purpose it serves:

"TeenHelp goes 'down' or offline from time to time. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. Some people couldn’t care less, some people think it’s annoying but find other things to do, and some people go absolutely crazy without TeenHelp! Our goal is to lift everyone’s mood when TeenHelp is down, and to provide some inspiration for what you can do in the meantime."

This website is not meant to be a substitute for TeenHelp or the Facebook TeenHelp group. I just thought it would be something nice that everyone could view and contribute to while the site is down in the future (which may or may not happen any time in the near future). =)

It's a really good idea, Robin. I've had to stop myself from going crazy with submissions. I do a lot of random things when TH is down.

Thanks for sharing. Sometimes when TH goes down I'm fine, but it's a pain when it goes down when you need it. This looks really useful.

Don't think it's advertisement. No. This is for the sake for members who need help and suggestions to keep themselves busy during the time without TH. Not for the benefit of the sites creator. Whatever helps should be posted here.

I posted the link on the Facebook page since I didn't see it so now we can get to it from there instead of just here (which would kind of defeat the purpose )

No it's not advertisement as for some it is a distraction - its good because it sort of motivates me to do other than things than morun the loss of TH for a couple of days - like this time I ''coped'' by : throwing skype parties, Tiny chat parties, finding another chatroom, playing guitar hero and painting my nails. It also gives other ideas of things to do when TH is down.

It's a Tumblr. We're allowed to post Tumblr links and allowed to provide resources for other users while the site is down. Or even while the site is up.

Thank you, Robin. I think this is wonderful.

Hahaha, love this. Thanks! OMG, it is very frustrating. It was originally very temtping to get a sub-machine gun and shoot all hell out of my laptop because I thought my laptop was the problem and then when I realised it was the same with everyone in the world, either that was a MASSIVE coincidence or the site was the problem.

Yay for Robin!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

No. Robin's website is a tumblr blog, and tumblr (because it is similar to social networking) is often blocked in schools. TeenHelp is a forum which usually isn't blocked in schools unless inappropriate content is flagged up.

It's not an advertisement. Calm down. If the mods had a problem with it, they would have done something already.

It's merely a suggestion for something to do when TH isn't working.

To even further clarify why this IS advertisement
'Users may post a single link to a personal website within their user profile or within their signature'
Straight from the code of conduct, you can't just cut down the sentence to bend it to your meaning.
This link has had a thread made about it, that is neither in the signature OR on a profile.

Funny how I've seen other threads like this deleted, yet when a staff member makes one it remains open

DUDE, give it up, this is not Current Events and it is not advertisement! A dual moderator started this thread and Hester (the General mod) has already seen this and even commented on it!

Twice!

Re: When TeenHelp Is Down - August 9th 2012, 05:49 PM

First, I would like to say that it warms my heart to see how many people have benefited from this resource! When I created this website last week, I didn't know if anyone would actually find it to be useful. I'm glad I can continue to serve this community, both on TeenHelp and offsite, and when TeenHelp is "up" and "down." I'm impressed by the number of submissions and the unique ways in which members cope when one of their primary resources (TeenHelp) is unavailable!

Next, I would like to address the two concerns brought up by a member on this thread:
1) That this thread would be considered an advertisement, and is therefore in violation of the Code of Conduct.
2) That the team of staff would give me "special treatment" due to my status as a staff member and forum moderator.

I'm actually going to address the second concern first. One thing I absolutely, positively do NOT want is for ANYONE to receive "special treatment" from the team of staff, regardless of whether they are staff or non-staff, "veterans" or "newbies," popular or relatively unknown, etc. The fact that I am a staff member and forum moderator should NOT factor into the team's decision to leave this thread as it is or to close/trash it. If the team feels that this thread is in violation of the Code of Conduct, then I URGE them to do the right thing and close or trash this thread as they see fit. I would rather be reprimanded for breaking a rule than to give this community the impression that staff members (or certain individuals that are well-liked by staff members) are "above the law." Again, I cannot stress enough that the forum moderators, Project Advisors, and Project Coordinators MUST do what they feel is right regarding the decision to leave this thread as it is or to close/trash it.

Now I will address the first concern. I am not going to argue that this isn't an advertisement, because depending on what definition of "advertisement" you use, this very well COULD be considered an advertisement. One definition (from Dictionary.com) states that an advertisement is "a paid announcement, as of goods for sale, in newspapers or magazines, on radio or television, etc." Another definition states that an advertisement is merely "a public notice." Well, this is certainly a public notice! Then again, people make "public notices" in the forums all the time. One example I could provide is located in the Technology and Gaming forum. It's a sticky created by a fellow member titled "Recommended Software." This thread was made a sticky by the team of staff, but it was actually written by a non-staff member. There is a list of various products - some are free, some are not. Technically, this thread is also an "advertisement," so why hasn't it been removed? The answer, in my opinion, is because the Code of Conduct wasn't designed to prevent ALL forms of advertisement.

I realize this is neither the time nor place to argue the fairness of the Code of Conduct. It is what it is, and I am not seeking to modify it to suit my needs. What I would like everyone to consider, though, is WHY TeenHelp forbids advertising. What exactly is bad about advertising? (Once again) the answer, in my opinion, is that it uses this website for a purpose it was never meant to serve. TeenHelp was not created so that members of corporations and creators of products could come on here and convince 50,000 members to buy or subscribe to their goods or services. This website was created in order to:
  • Provide support and advice to anybody in need
  • Encourage those in need to seek support and advice from professionals, in addition to using [TeenHelp's] services
  • Raise awareness of issues faced by young people and to help and encourage them to address those issues locally, nationally and/or internationally
  • Promote tolerance and understanding between all people, from all walks of life
  • Foster confidence in one's ability to succeed regardless of how troubled one's past may be
  • Instill the importance of reaching out to those in need both within the TeenHelp community and throughout the world
Advertisements (or "public notices") that are not in line with TeenHelp's Mission Statement should always be called into question. Some cases are going to be black-and-white, while others will fall into a gray area. When advertisements fall into a gray area, it is up to the team of staff to use their best judgment when determining whether or not the advertisement should remain in public view of TeenHelp's members. With that being said, I ask that those with the concern stated above examine this thread, and the thread I mentioned in the Technology and Gaming forum. What purpose do these advertisements serve? Are they meant to benefit the community, solely the original poster, or both? If the original poster (or a third party connected to the original poster in some way) can benefit from the advertisement, how exactly do they benefit from it? Will the advertisement distract from TeenHelp's Mission Statement? These are all important questions to ask whenever you see an advertisement.

It is my understanding that the sticky in Technology and Gaming is permitted because it provides a valuable resource to the community as a whole. Many of TeenHelp's members are ignorant about software. Since they are (obviously) using their computers in order to access TeenHelp, it is in their best interests to ensure their computers are protected. The thread offers support to those who are ignorant about software, and it provides advice as to which products can be obtained. Based on that reasoning, I would conclude that the thread should remain in the forum, even though some would argue it is advertising.

Let's take a look at the areas of the Code of Conduct that specifically apply to this situation.

Under "General Posting Guidelines":

"Posts should not be made solely in order to convince other users to visit another website or to buy a product. This includes other areas within TeenHelp itself, such as asking users to visit a specific thread or blog."

Technically, this IS a specific (Tumblr) blog; however, I did not create this post solely to convince other users to visit that website. I created this post so members could become aware of a potentially beneficial resource. This isn't a personal blog where I talk about my problems and encourage others to comment on my entries, nor is this a blog where I post inspirational pictures/quotes I like and encourage others to "follow" me. This is a resource for the entire TeenHelp community, pure and simple. I may be the only person who can log in to the website, but the content comes from members of TeenHelp, NOT from me. I just ensure the submitted content is not triggering, dangerous, or offensive in some way.

Additionally, this area of the Code of Conduct applies to "spam-like" behavior. According to Dictionary.com, spam consists of "disruptive messages, especially commercial messages posted on a computer network or sent as e-mail." I don't believe this thread would be considered "spam," as it is not disruptive. If anything, as I stated above, it has proven to be a beneficial resource to several members of this community.

Under "Advertisement Policy":

"Users may post a single link to a personal website within their user profile or within their signature; this should not be posted repeatedly over TeenHelp, however."

Well, you've got me there: I didn't post this link in my profile or signature. I chose to post it in the General forum instead. First, I would question whether or not this is a "personal" website. As I stated above, it's clear this website isn't about me or for me - it's about and for the community as a whole. The vast majority of submissions have come from other members. I would argue that the website is far from "personal" - in fact, it's quite "public," as anyone can submit content to the website. The members of TeenHelp essentially get to control what appears on that website. I merely ensure the content is safe and appropriate to view.

Additionally, while I didn't post this link in my profile or signature, I also didn't post this multiple times across the TeenHelp website. I posted the link ONCE, where it would be highly visible to members who were frustrated by the prolonged downtime. I could have posted this link in my signature and had it show up in 5000+ posts... but I knew there were people who were struggling to cope with the downtime, and I wanted to reach out to them as quickly as possible. Again, this is not an argument to keep this thread open - I am merely stating my reasoning, and why I felt there was leeway to post here vs. "posting" it 5000+ times via my signature.

Lastly, I would like to say that both of these concerns brought up by a member on this thread are perfectly valid. If anyone feels I have not properly addressed your concerns, then I encourage you to REPORT this thread. You can do so by clicking on the red box in the upper-right corner of my first post. From there, the team of staff will discuss whether or not this thread should be left open, or closed/trashed. What I do NOT encourage you to do is violate the Code of Conduct by making off-topic posts. That would put you in the same position I am currently in, and I certainly do not want that to happen. =)

Re: When TeenHelp Is Down - August 10th 2012, 10:02 AM

I have decided to leave this thread on the forums, for the reasons that Robin has covered pretty thoroughly in the above post. However, I have decided to close it to avoid any more off topic posts.

If anyone has any issues with this post, I would urge them to report the post, and I will reconsider based on what they have to say. Also, if you notice that a thread has been trashed because of advertising and you didn't agree with the decision, I would urge you to bring that up with the moderator of the forum it was in. If the moderator does not give you a satisfactory response, you also have the option of bringing it up with the Disputes Committee and the Performance Committee. Moderators are only human, and a lot of decisions are made based on context. We would love to hear your opinions, but things are only guaranteed to be dealt with if the issues are brought to our attention in the correct way.

It won't be quiet, it won't be safe, and it won't be calm. But I'll tell you what it will be: The trip of a lifetime!
