Closing of threads - November 24th 2012, 01:25 PM

I have a question. How come a thread gets closed? Does a thread have some sort of limit for how long it can be open or is it just because someone else posts that same thread before you and then it becomes doubled up?

If a thread remains inactive for a specific amount of time it will automatically lock itself. This feature was added (in my opinion) due to the amount of people who would Google something, find a very old thread, make an account, and then post in said thread without realizing it's old and has run it's course/served it's purpose (necroposting).
At one point there would be numerous threads that would be inactive for months or a year that would be brought back up to the front page because nobody looked at the dates.

There is that, what Richard said.

We also close threads for a number of other reasons:
-Redundant answers. For example "What's 2+2?" Everyone says four, so we would close because there is no other answer for it. That, and we try to control empty inflation to a post count. Sorry for the poor example, by the way.
-Threads that go off topic.
-We close threads on request. So if the original poster wants it closed, we close it.
-Threads that break rules.
-Threads that turn into arguments.
-Threads that serve no purpose.

I can't think of anymore reasons

Duplicates, Lynds.
We close threads that have been created before. For example, one member posting the same thing twice in two forums, or like this week when we had two "Happy Thanksgiving!" threads.
Also, like Richard said, threads that have had no replies for 2 weeks automatically close. It keeps the forums tidier and stops confusion when a thread from 3 years ago randomly pops up again.
