Paint!! - January 18th 2013, 09:14 PM

Hi everyone, I hope you're having a great day!

So this week I've started painting my room. It hasn't been painted since I was 10 so for the past decade it's been lilac with pink glittery flowers and silver stars stenciled on. Time for a change!

My plan is to paint my walls white and I've got stamps I can use to put purple and teal butterflies and flowers on the walls, and little stars trailing behind the butterflies. I'm not sure yet if this will be a bit more grown up, or more immature for my age yet, but I think it'll be nice.

Anyway, about 2 1/2 years ago I used permanent marker (I know, bad idea) to write quotes on my walls. Three of my four walls now have large permanent marker letters on them, and so far two layers of paint haven't covered them. They're a lot fainter, and you can't see them unless you're right next to the wall, but I want to completely cover them. I'm putting another coat on tomorrow (maybe two more if I have time/it needs it) but what I want to know is: Do you think white paint will cover black permanent marker alright? Will it start to show through over time? It's matt paint if it helps, I don't know if it being matt or emulsion will make any difference.

The other thing was, obviously around my door and window I've had to use a paintbrush because the roller is too big. But it's really obvious in some places where I've done this, is there any way I can make them merge a bit better? My dad is amazing at painting and he'd be able to help easily but that's a tad complicated just now and I can't/won't ask him to help me, for both our sakes.

In short: Will white paint cover permanent marker, permanently?
And how do I make paint that's been roller-ed on blend better with paint that's been brushed on?

Any help is appreciated!

I can't get any other rollers. I'm at work 9-1 tomorrow, and being picked up straight from work and am painting as soon as I get in (4 hours needed between coats so I need to start early) I won't have the time to pick up any more rollers or anything and don't have the money anyway.

I've tried using different angles and stuff to roll over the bits once I've painted them but it's not always possible.

TIP FROM ART SCHOOL:

We regularly had to paint our studio walls back to white after they had all sorts of weird and wonderful colours on them, including black. What you need to do, is paint over it with GREY paint first, let it dry, and THEN do white.

I know grey paint is an extra expense, but trust me on this one, it WORKS.
Medium grey is best.

As for blending and such. Did you try lining edges with tape so you can get the paint on the tape all while blending and such?

Well I'm pretty much done. The grey paint is a great tip I'll remember in future, sadly since I'd already used half my paint on two layers of white, I really couldn't afford to start over with grey.
I dunno how but the edges seem to have kinda merged themselves, seems to work better when I do whatever I can with the big roller and then while the paint is wet, go over the edges and into the little parts I couldn't reach before. Whatever it is, it worked!
You can still really really faintly see the penned in words up close when the light is on so I'll go over them one last time once the paint has dried in a bit. Thanks for the tips, I'll need to remember to A. Use tape next time, and B. Ask BEFORE I start.
