chat banning - April 8th 2013, 01:41 AM

So recently, I've been going through people's pages on TH and noticed a line going through some of the users' names and it would say "chat banned". I'm just wondering, out of curiosity...what gets someone to be chat banned? What are some of the reasons, and how does it happen? I don't mean to be noisy, I'm just interested. Hope you don't mind. Maybe someone who has been chat banned can let me know why and stuff? I just want to understand this better, if that's okay.

ps:And after someone gets banned, is it permanent and if not then how long does it last

thanks so much,

Hi Susan,

I've copied this directly from TeenHelp's Code of Conduct:

Chat Room rules

The following rules apply specifically to the Chat Room:

Only use the rooms for their intended purposes. Where possible, try and ask for advice through the Support and Advice rooms or private messaging rather than the Chat Lobbies, as these are the best places to seek advice in the Chat Room. You are free to ask for advice in the Chat Lobby, but many users will not be receptive there. Conversely, users should not chit-chat or idle extensively in the Support and Advice rooms, as these are intended solely for giving and receiving support or advice. Please bear in mind that other users may be in the midst of receiving advice themselves in the Support and Advice rooms. If this is the case, please try to either wait your turn or send a Private Message to someone willing to help.
Use private messages when appropriate. If your conversation with another person seems to be bothering the rest of the people in the Chat Room, move it to a private message, even if you do not think your conversation is inappropriate.

Most of the time, a user will be banned from chat for excessive inappropriate behavior. This can include spamming (posting the same thing over and over), advertising, and harassing other members or being persistently and consistently bothersome.

A chat ban length is up to the discretion of Staff, and is usually for one month. However, a user can receive a longer ban (after receiving PMs, warnings, etc) if deemed necessary.

Actually, if a user's username is black and crossed out, they are banned from the site entirely. If a user has a red username that is not bolded, then they are chat banned.
Usually the moderators will only ban users from chat when we feel they pose a danger or don't follow the rules which Kat posted above.

And here you are living, despite it all.

The rules quoted above are those that apply specifically to the Chat Room, however the entirety of the Code of Conduct applies to the Chat Room as well, which you can read here: http://www.teenhelp.org/conduct.

Some of the main rules include:
  • Rudeness.
  • Spam (e.g. advertising).
  • Triggering / graphic material (e.g. likely to cause distress or make someone want to hurt themselves).

I don't think it was mentioned above - but back in my day day I knew a few people who were banned for using offensive language..

This should come under "rudeness" as of Rob's post and "excessive profanity" / NonPG-13 as of the Code of Conduct and Terms of Service.

There are links at the bottom of every page to each of the relevant pages.

when a 22 year old guy asks a 14 year old girl for her age/sex/location

i can imagine that would get someone banned if asked repeatedly
