Question Procrastination? - June 9th 2013, 11:56 PM

I have... Procrastination. When doing everything.

Need to go for my daily jog: "Oh, I'll do it at three... four... five... six... seven... eight." I finally do it at eight, the latest possible hour.

Need to research something for a story: "Oh, I'll do it in a few minutes. Gotta look at funny lolcat thingies first."

Need to clean my room: "Okay... I'll actually do this one, so I can laze around and procrastinate about everything else all day."

Anyone else have this problem? It's seriously inhibiting my progress in... Well, everything. How can I get out of the habit of procrastinating?

1. Do what you want within the bounds of reason, whenever you want to, and regret nothing. 2. If you have an opinion, don't beat around the bush, or there isn't a point in saying it. 3. Don't keep the company of anyone who won't like you and will try to change you.

Hey Anna, yes I absolutely have this problem! What works for me is that I set up a reward system, I can do something I want only after I finish something (or part of something, depending what it is) that I don't want to do. The tough part with this though is holding yourself to it. It might help to have someone else hold you accountable. I also keep reminding myself of that feeling I hate when assignments are hanging over my head and I know it's better to just get them over with, especially when I'm doing something else and I know I could be working on them instead.

I have the same issue with doing house work or when I was at college, revision. I just think, "I'll do it later" and then later never arrives.

I found it's so much easier if I clear my mind and stop thinking about the thing I need to do and be spontaneous. Then I'll leap out of my lazy seat and go do what needs to be done.

Sometimes it's just a matter of motivation, when I've been spontaneous or I do something because I know it'll make someone else happy it makes me feel motivated to continue. It's just getting that ball rolling that can be the issue.

I find that it really helps to rid yourself of your distractions. As hard as it may be to get away from your computer or book or television show, it's the only way that you're going to get things done. Like Kate said, reward yourself with these things after you're done doing what you need to do.
When I have something that I need to do and I'm procrastinating, I tend to get really stressed. Thinking about how nice things will be once the task is completed usually helps me get started.
There isn't really any "quick fix", though. You eventually just have to get up and do what you need to do. There isn't really a way around it.

I have this problem and the way I deal with it is to just do it, usually I'll tell myself I do it later a few times first and eventually I just tell myself that I can't keep putting it off and I need to do it, even if I don't want to because once it's done, it's done and I can carry on with things I want to do.

It does work, after a bit of procrastinating first..

Reward, reward, reward.
Tell yourself "after I do this, I can watch tv" (or whatever it is you want to do)

I'm such a procrastinator, too! The funny thing is that I usually reward myself before I actually do something productive, if I do it at all. Haha. I reward myself for my future plans. Bad habit.

I'm terrible when it comes to procrastination. I'm supposed to be doing paperwork at the moment and here I am on TH posting!!! I simply just cant concentrate. As for what to do about it ? Do some work, take a break, do some more and then take a break. Weather or not it will work is a different matter. As for me I am currently procrastinating....

I have this problem too with some things, it depends on what it is. With a lot of things I like to get it done early so I don't have to worry about it later, but with other things I procrastinate until the last possible second, like with cleaning the kitchen or folding laundry or things like that. I'm sort of back and forth between procrastinating and wanting to get going now.

I've actually gotten pretty good at avoiding procrastination. Some of the things mentioned above like rewarding yourself or telling yourself you can do such-and-such for longer if you get it done now (takes a while to get the hang of it) worked for me.

I tend to procrastinate a lot..especially if its something that I don't enjoy doing such as homework, cleaning my room, washing dishes, laundry, etc. But yeah, I eventually get my work done on time

Mine is pretty bad! I'm actually now on medication for it which has helped some, but my time management skill isn't that well cultivated. Getting some basic routines down has helped me a lot.
