How can I discipline myself to go to sleep by a certain time? - July 2nd 2013, 12:32 PM

I know essentially it's down to me, but if you guys have any ideas (rewards, punishments, whatever) specifically for not staying on the Internet for too long at night that'd be much appreciated :3

Here we have a timer set on our router so it turns off at a specific time. This pretty much forces me to stop being at the computer and get to bed.

Hey there! =) I'm going to move your thread to the General forum, as this doesn't seem to be directly related to mental health (although sleep deprivation and poor sleeping habits can certainly have an affect on someone's mental health!).

If you still live with your parents and live by their house rules, you could ask them to get involved and password-protect your computer. If they don't tell you the password, then they'll be completely in charge of when you get to use the computer. The reward/punishment system could be pretty straight-forward. Let's say the goal is to be off the computer by 10 PM. If your parents come into the room and see you're on the computer at/after 10 PM, they'll not only log you off immediately, but they'll refuse to log you on at all the following day. If they come into the room and see you're working toward falling asleep (ex. brushing your teeth, setting your alarm clock, or already lying in bed), they'll allow you to access the computer as usual the following day.

Personally, I would HATE to give my parents so much control over my computer use... so I would be motivated to stick to my usual bedtime routine every single night, in order to avoid losing my computer privileges for entire days. You could work out an agreement with your parents, where they'll remove the password protection after one uninterrupted month of good behavior. If you ever find yourself slipping up again in the future, you could work out a similar agreement with your parents. Perhaps the very thought of going back to this type of system would encourage you to return to better sleeping habits, and you wouldn't need to implement the discipline system a second time!

Stick to a routine. Wake up & go to bed around the same every day. Try to avoid staying up late on weekends, that can throw you off. Basically, I think it's about self-control & just making sure you sleep & wake up at the same times.
