Pronouns instead of Gender field? - August 15th 2016, 07:21 PM

So I recently redid my profile and I was thinking, would it be better to have "pronouns" instead of "gender" in the little space for information next to your posts? A lot of people on this site don't fit into male or female, and will often put something that doesn't really help tell what pronouns they use. I was just wondering if other people felt this would be a good feature to have. In college we had specific LGBT spaces and when introducing yourself you'd normally say what pronouns you use and it made a lot of people feel more comfortable.

That makes a lot of sense. I've seen some users insert their pronoun into that space but I totally agree that having that on the profile would be very helpful so we know how to address individuals.

I agree. I've had mine like this for a while. I think there should be a section for gender if somebody chooses to have it showing, but a separate required spot where folks can put their pronouns so that we know what to refer to them in the forums. For now, I can at least recommend folks edit their gender section to place their pronouns if they'd like to specify, and if enough users express interest, I can see if I can relay this up to higher staff members to consider as a suggestion.

I agree that allowing users to select their preferred pronoun would definitely be helpful on the forums. Not everyone assigns as cis or trans, but pronouns are stationary. There's three and that's all there are. Unless you want to go interspecial (ie, human, werewolf, cat, furry, etc), then whatever.

I think a pronoun thing would be a good addition! I've also had some trouble a couple of times trying to figure out what pronouns to use when talking to another user or responding to a post. On top of that, it's awesome to normalize the idea that gender and pronouns shouldn't be assumed, and I feel like a pronoun indicator thing would be a great way to do that

I put in my about me section what pronouns I go by, but this is definitely a good idea. Pronouns are something that are important to a lot of people, so putting pronouns down would help people know what to refer to them as and not just assume them.

Also Kaleidoscope, I love how you put human under interspecies

that's a fantastic idea! and such a section should also, of course, take into account people who use two or more sets of pronouns (e.g. i use both she/her and they/them pronouns, i don't mind what i'm referred to as, provided it's not he/him) and people who don't have any preference for pronouns. c:

This is a really great idea! Pronouns are really important to a lot of people, and it'd really help prevent confusion or offending anyone.

Everyone on this site is MALE or FEMALE.

I suppose we could have a fill in box so someone could write cornbread or Dragonkin.

This tumblr insanity.

The only place to word your differing opinion like this on this website is the Current Events and Debates forum. I suggest you hang out there.

I like the idea of having a section for gender and a section for pronouns as well. We could do some kind of option in the User CP where you can check off gender, pronouns, or both to display on your profile. Kind of like the options we have on whether or not we want to display our name or age.

As a reminder, everyone is entitled to their own opinion as long as they are expressing it respectfully. Everyone is also expected to respect each others opinion, regardless if you agree with it. While people are allowed to have 'unpopular' or negative opinions, if you feel someone's opinion is disrespectful please utilize TeenHelp's report feature instead of arguing about it in this thread. If you wish to debate a topic on gender identity then feel free to create a thread in the Current Events and Debates forum as this thread's purpose is to discuss a possible feature on the TeenHelp.

I personally feel adding a pronoun field to the profile would make certain users more comfortable using the site. I messaged Rob a while ago about adding an additional gender option on HelpLINK for users and guests who did not identify as male, female, or trans. We now have an "other" option on the form. I know for me it makes me more comfortable should I want to use HelpLINK in the future considering I did not identify as the previous three options.

I would just like to note, Rob may not be capable of doing this even though everyone would like to see it happen. It all depends on the capabilities of the forum's options that TeenHelp is hosted on. Regardless, it would be awesome if this were possible to put in place.
