Just a FYI. - April 3rd 2017, 08:56 AM

About a week or two ago, I visited the forum and got a pop-up saying that there was a virus trying to take my personal information, I closed it but it reopened, I had to use task manager to close my browser just to get rid of it. I came back a week after and had no issues until now, when the same pop-up appeared.

I did a virus scan after the first time, just to be safe, nothing came up so I feel it's something on this site possibly that is making this pop-up appear? I don't have an image of it unfortunately but there is a pop-up stating that something is trying to take my personal information and there is a small window behind that but I can never see what it says because the other pop-up appears over it.

I just thought I'd mention it, I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this? Maybe I'm wrong with it being site related but yeah, just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Re: Just a FYI. - April 3rd 2017, 10:00 AM

I'm experiencing this too and was meaning to write a thread on it! I've also been meaning to take a picture of it...for me it's on a red background.

I get that pop when I'm either clicking on who's online/social groups/blogs and only once when I was viewing a thread. I too thought it was a virus but I've scanned and not found anything. Though I'm wondering if it's because I'm using internet explorer which I know isn't the best browser.

To get rid of it, I hover over the IE icon to see all my open tabs, click the cross, and then click 'ok' on the pop and after four times it goes. Annoying but harmless, I reckon.

I had the same problem when I was viewing a thread the other day. I use Firefox, so I know the issue isn't exclusive to IE. I opened my task manager and closed all open tasks and then scanned my laptop for a virus. It said I didn't have one, but I've still been really cautious lately.

Do any of you have the Avast anti-virus software installed? I never get this on TeenHelp but on another message board, I get it from time to time. It's a warning message from Avast and the background is red.

This has also never happened to me and I use chrome, although my computer does agree that TH is not a secure connection. I also have Avast installed, so I'm not sure why I wouldn't have had it happen if it's a warning message from Avast.

Re: Just a FYI. - April 3rd 2017, 11:18 PM

Mine wasn't a warning message from Avast. Mine said it was a warning notification from Windows Defender and tried to get me to call a number so someone could manually take over my computer and get it resolved.

If you guys see something like that, make sure you scan your laptop yourself first because it's usually a scam!

I haven't had any issues but I only have Macs and use Safari. I use Firefox if I'm in chat and I haven't had a warning. But thanks for letting us know!

I use chrome and on both my windows and linux machines I haven't seen this. Btw, avast isn't the most secure virus scanner so try other ones. I recommend Malwarebytes which I heard was the strongest but I'm sure there's others as well.

Re: Just a FYI. - April 4th 2017, 05:00 AM

I've seen this on other websites which often pop-up advertisements.

Check your browser history and see if you can find the link to the offending pop-up. (You may send it to me if you find it.)

In the past the link came from a web domain which soon shut down the offending site within a day or two.

In the past when one of these offending pop-ups locks up my web browser I've been able to kill my web browser via Windows Task Manager. (Alternatively, one could just reboot their computer.)

The warnings I've seen are a scam, where they try to extort money out of you to fix a problem which doesn't exist, or which they themselves are causing.

I am intrigued hearing about this issue suddenly popping up here at TH, because I've never seen TH use pop-up advertising, so I'm interested in how this is happening. (Maybe I'll get lucky and it will happen to me.)

(I have a degree in Computer Science so I have skills in this area.)

I have Norton. But anyway, managed to get a few pictures of the pop-up this morning (attached). The first is how it initially appears, the second one is when I click on 'ok' on the first pop up and the third one is what happens when I move the pop up to see the bit underneath.

Oh and this happened going from new posts to the forums.

Re: Just a FYI. - April 5th 2017, 06:32 AM

It could be a fake trojen adware that got installed somehow.

There are various adware remover programs around (beware, some of them are fake!).

I've used SpyHunter in the past.

There's a post here listing some other ones:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/vir...-software-scam

This post makes it seem a lot harder than it is. It lists Rkill, Emsisoft Anti-Malware, AdwCleaner, HitmanPro, Secunia PSI.

Of those, I recognize AdwCleaner and HitmanPro I've used in the past.

Usually just one good anti-malware program is good enough.

(I think I paid for SpyHunter once, but then never renewed as I never had any further need for it.)

(I sometimes wonder why Anti-Virus software doesn't also protect against adware malware like this.)
