voice - October 16th 2017, 05:01 AM

Anyone hate/uncomfortable when they hear their voice on a video, tape, recording etc? I don't know why but I just hate when I hear my voice on a video or anything like that. I really don't like listening to my own voice and it makes me uncomfortable. I just don't like my voice, think it sounds weird, think it sounds babyish well not babyish just young I guess I don't know how to explain it.

Anyone else hate listening to their own voice?

You're not the only one who feels that way! I hate hearing the sound of my own voice. I think it's perfectly normal for everyone, that's probably the biggest thing we're all self-conscious of.

I loathe my voice so much. Especially because I have such a deaf voice even though I have people telling me that it sounds fine but I'm insecure about. I've learnt to switch my voice off somehow and I always have people telling me to use my voice You're not the only one.

You are certainly not alone in feeling this way. I've never liked listening to my own voice and it makes me cringe when I hear a recording of it. It just sounds....so different than how you hear yourself speaking in real time.

Re: voice - October 16th 2017, 03:33 PM

I donít like hearing my own voice, especially in video recordings or over the phone. I have phone sessions and sometimes the audio goes wacky and I can actually hear what I say repeated on the other end of the line. It makes talking about difficult things a little bit harder. I think it makes me self-conscious.

I don't mind hearing my voice when I am speaking in real life. However, I cannot stand hearing myself on a recording. Like Oliver said, when you hear a recording your voice sounds so much different. In my opinion, my voice sounds kind of 'childish' over the phone/recording and I think that is why it bothers me so much to hear.

I think this also contributes to my phone anxiety although it definitely is not the only reason I have phone anxiety.

I definitely feel the same. For my dissertation, I had to conduct and record an interview, then listen to it back and transcribe it. Since I already had my questions typed out, I would skip over the part where I was speaking, just so I didn't have to listen.

I hate hearing my voice over the phone and in video/audio recordings. I feel like it's childish, and I intern at a DV center and what I do is answering the phone! I don't like to sound like a little kid answering the phone. I feel like a lot of people don't like the sound of their own voice.

Yeah, Now I feel less alone. Seems to be universal that people don't like hearing their voice on a recording, video etc. Even though I'm sure our voice is probably normal to others around us. I have phone phobia too and that contributes to it as well.

There is science behind why we don't like the sound of our own voice. It has something to do with how vibrations hit your ear drum differently since your voice is coming from your own body. I've heard if you take two folders and hold them next to your ear and speak, you can hear what others hear. Haven't tried it, though.
