Off Peak/Peak - June 29th 2009, 02:37 PM

you know what i don't get, at holiday places and attractions when it's peak time the price goes up. Like at the swimming pool near me we had to pay more because it was school holidays and a peak time, but at peak time they get more visitors so why would they need to put the price up, wouldn't it make sense to charge more at off peak times coz they don't get as many visitors?

Because more people WANT to go during peak times, they can get away with charging more.

Re: Off Peak/Peak - June 29th 2009, 02:59 PM

It's supply and demand. They always have a set number of 'slots' that can be taken up by customers. During peak times there are more customers, but the product (the 'slots' in their establishment) remains the same. So higher demand with the same supply means higher prices.

The reason it's not good for them to do as you suggested is that during peak times they are going to be getting more people, they know this. There are plenty of people to fill their 'slots' and even if higher prices drive a couple away, it's not a big deal, they end up making more money from the higher price point. Durng off-peak times they have less visitors and many empty slots so it is in their best interest to attract more visitors, hence the lower price.

Hiya Cara,

Yes like the others have said, it's more in demand. If they charge their usual price they won't make as much mullah. By charging more to the people during peak time, they will still get the same people, but with making them spend more money, it's more of a profit for them.

clever eh? Take care.

I used to always think the same way as you, and even though I can know understand why the prices would be lower during off-peak times it's still something I have a rant about from time to time But then again, if you make the most of going during off-peak times where it's less busy *and* cheaper you may end up having an even better time!
