What to bring camping? - July 20th 2009, 04:02 PM

Me and a bunch of friends are taking a vacation from our vacation and are going camping for a couple weeks in the mountains next week. I was wondering what I should bring for this. I haven't been camping since I was a little kid so I'm really excited.
I know we need to bring food (any ideas on what kinds of food are good for camping?)
Matches
Tents
Sleeping bags
Bear spray (Gotta watch out for those mean grizzly bears )
Rope
Lots of water
Oh and of course BEER no camping trip could be complete without it.

So, I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything on this list. It'd be a huge shame if we do the 12 hour drive and then realize we forgot something and need to buy a new one or go back.

How about clothes and food?
Medication/painkillers would also be wise to take, just incase anyone needs them.

There's quite a good camping checklist [here].

Remember that any food you bring needs to be resealed and placed somewhere where the wildlife (including bears and raccoons) can't get to it. A good tactic is to hang the food about ten-fifteen feet in the air on a line strung between two trees.

Actually, a first-aid kit in general would be good.
flashlights?
Be sure to bring non-perishable items or small quantities with the plan of buying more.
air mattress, foam mattress, etc. it will make sleeping much more comfortable. Also be sure to bring warm clothes as it can get very cold overnight!
a camp stove
marshmallows and roasting sticks!

That's actually why I wrote rope on my list :P

Flashlights is a great idea, would have sucked if I forgot those.
Medication should have been obvious but believe it or not I probably would have left without my own had nobody said anything.
Foam mattress is now on my packing pile, thanks for reminding me.
I'll be sure to check out that link that Stephanie posted for more good ideas.
Oh and thanks a lot to whoever mentioned the first aid kit, you probably just saved us a good lot of grief lol.

Medication.
Soap.
Hair styling products in case the electricity doesn't work there.
More clothes than you think you need.
I.D./drivers license. We got caught without a fishing license and we got into trouble.
Make sure you lock up your food.
A cot if you want to sleep outside. I liked it.
Change for the payphone in case something happens and cell phones don't work/soda machines.

Yep. I love fishing, and I bought my fishing license. So now I can fish pretty much whenever. Make sure you get the right stamps or whatever though. If you are going to fish, make sure you're doing everything legal. Some waters have a fish limit, or there are places where you can't use barbed hooks, for example.

I've only ever gone camping at festivals, but a life saver is a trolley! I soon get fed up with carrying everything on my back - especially if you're taking a lot of beer - that's heavy!

Bring spare tarps or large garbage bags. Put a tarp under the tent and over the tent if it looks like it's going to rain. Getting caught in the rain in a tent is not fun- especially if it leaks. Lots of rope is a good idea too.

Food ideas:
Hot dogs (easy to stick on a stick and cook over a fire)
Marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate for smores
Eggs (bring a camp stove or large metal frying pan that you can put over a fire)
things for sandwiches (can be made beforehand or at the campsite)
Trail mix or nuts
Pretzels

Also, bring stuff to do! Bring a book or a board game just in case you and your friends run out of things to do. Or bring a ball for catch or a frizbee.
