Thumbs down How can you have a non-awkward goodbye with someone? - July 23rd 2009, 05:31 PM

It seems like Every goodbye I have is awkward! I don't want it to be awkward anymore!! what happens: I hug, say goodbye, and wait by the door for them to leave, but for some odd reason my friends just stand there and keep talking and don't leave! HELP!!!

Just hug them, say see you later, maybe wave and then start to shut the door. They'll probably get the hint and start to walk off.

I have to agree with Elle...begin shutting the door
Just back off and walk away, an ending statement such as 'see you soon' is a good idea as it kind of reinforces the fact that they're leaving.

I guess that could be a tad awkward, but since them continuing talking is a sign that they're not making the move to say goodbye try and take control of the situation by continuing the 'goodbye' yourself. Like people have said, start shutting the door, arrange for another time to meet, or just throw a 'goodbye' out there and they should get the idea

I have the same problem! Except it's over the phone, I never know how to say goodbye. Is it only when you're wanting to go in your house that you find it awkward to say goodbye? You just need to say goodbye and fight the awkwardness and shut the door, it wears off after awhile right??
