Arrow What's your greatest fear? - October 15th 2009, 05:34 AM

Simply put, what's your greatest fear? It can either be what you could become, what you could lose, or something else personal to you.

For me it's a constant fear that one day I could repeat the sins of my father. I'm an orphan, I have adoptive parents but I know I'm nothing like my adoptive father. But, I desperately want to be like him, I want to be his son - I fear being my biological father's son. From what I can gather he wasn't a good man, he might have hurt people, maybe even killed them. Most likely a criminal. Whenever things get wrong, he'd run away. That's why he ran away on me and my Mom. How do I know this? I've been haunted by thoughts that I don't know where they come from, I was put in a situation where I almost killed someone (albeit to save someone) and it came all too naturally and easy for me. When things started heating up around my house with my parents, I ran away - just like him. It's like no matter how far I run (fuck, there I go again), it always brings me back to being his son. I fucking hate it. My worst fear is that it's not in my control, that the whole "most kids eventually become their parents" - well, what if I become my Dad? That fucking scares me more than anything else. I've never told my adoptive parents this, but it really haunts me and has tainted everything in my life. So, that's my fear that I'm trying to avoid without knowing if it's possible. Just hoping evolutionists and socio-biologists are wrong, that we don't get aspects of our parents because I don't want anything from that guy in me.

Re: What's your greatest fear? - October 15th 2009, 09:56 AM

Hi Josh!!

I hope you're having a dandy day!!

I understand and appreciate that fear. There was a time in my life when I considered it to be a great insult for someone to say, "You remind a lot of your father when HE was your age!!" [Or words to that effect] I did NOT want to be like my dad. He was [Far too often] an emotionally abusive alcoholic. I could rarely count on him - other than to cause chaos. He was far too often mean for the sake of being mean. A lousy dad for a sensitive guy like me. And like you - I often feared becoming HIM. "The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree!", I'd hear people say. And it always sounded like a curse. But as the years went on - I accepted the fact that I did indeed share some of my dad's character traits [Even a few - no doubt - that I didn't even know he had] and that's OK. Just as you - most likely - share some of YOUR dad's character traits. It's very unlikely that your dad [OR MINE - for that matter] were 100% awful. Besides - our dad's didn't give birth to us. Our MOM'S did. So we are NOT 100% 'him' - no matter how we might do the 'math'. And it's also important to note that our bloodline doesn't stop with him - OR our mom - but goes all the way back to the beginning of time. [Or at least the beginning of PEOPLE!!] There might be a few character traits that you share with your dad - but there might also be few that you share with your great-great-great-great-great grandfather. [Or anyone else you are actually related to by blood] That said though - YOU are the 'captain of your ship' - the 'master of your domain'. At least to a great extent. [Just as I am] And you are not bound to become like anything or anyone. And even though - every now and then - you might DO something that triggers that deeply rooted fear in you - don't give those 'moments' more power than they deserve. And truth be told - the very fact that it worries you means that it's even LESS likely that you will be following in his footsteps. Besides - look at me. Do I come across as an insensitive man who is mean for the sake of being mean? I don't think so. I am my own person. I am NOT my dad. And neither are you!!

GREAT BIG HUG
Craig!!

Let's see....
I recently went through a period of having an insane fear of death, complete hopelessness (imagine a Dawn of the Dead scenario, lol), being lost (and I just got my driver's license so that's....fun)

I'm afraid of being a horrible person, and hurting or driving away all the people who care about me.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

The feeling of falling. That pit of the stomach lurching, it terrifies me.
And my ex being hurt strangely, he's one of my closest friends and I'm always terrified something is going to happen to him.

1. Looking up at the ceiling and seeing...a spider coming down at me, legs moving and all! That almost happened to me once in the shower...good thing I saw it and killed it before it could happen...

2. Lice. They are parasites that get into your hair and are almost impossible to get rid of. When I had it when I was 13, it took 3 months for us to get out all of them and their....eggs....EW. I hear one mention of these things, and I'll go into a corner of a room away from everyone else so I can't get it. I'm not very trusting of brushes or headbands, either.

Re: What's your greatest fear? - October 19th 2009, 05:56 PM

I can't really pick one, as I'm so terrified of a lot of things.

Fireworks for instance are a huge huge phobia for me, as are men that I can't trust, but that's because of bad experiences that i've had. But I guess I have worse fears than those, and those are preeetty bad.

My biggest fear is failure. From a young age I've been made to do the absolute best and anything less than that was frowned upon. I was so scared of doing something not good enough as I thought that my dad wouldn't love me anymore. This has really affected me, even though now I don't care what my dad thinks. It's all buried deep inside and I have a huge alter ego making me feel so bad about myself. I tend to put too much pressure on myself, and by doing that I have no chance at all of doing good, I'm setting myself up for failure.
I can't take it at all if I do something wrong, I always feel like I can't live with that feeling. That's why I've been so terribly depressed, something always seems to go wrong.

my biggest fear is disapproval by the ones i love... i am not the real me around anyone, i change myself to fit in with everyone i meet because i am scared of disapproval, which i guess links in to a fear of being alone/lonely. also i am very scared of anything unknown to me such as death

My greatest fear is rejection. I always fear being rejected in any ways. Whether in love, school, friends, family, etc. That is why I don't usually into things that I don't have a 100% of winning it. It always makes me feel depressed and sad being rejected.

Dying. Only because I don't believe in an after life and believe after we die there is in fact complete nothingness. I know that shouldn't scare me but the idea of me not being here and my life being pretty much meaningless as I'll no longer have memories scares me so much The only thing that keeps me sane when I think about dying is knowing this "nothingness" must have happened before we were born too /: Which kind of makes me believe in reincarnation as whatever happened before may happen again. I just hate the unknown.

I'm also scared of never getting over my fear of talking to new people.

And I'm scared of never getting married.

Most practical (logical) fear: Abandonment or loss
Most influential fear: Failure
Greatest fear: Kind of hard to explain. It's more like a feeling or an energy than anything else. It's this feeling I get in dreams when I'm about to die, when I know it's coming. It's this feeling of dread like you know you're going to die soon but there's nothing you can do. I take comfort from the fact that this fear can't enter reality, though I felt something similar to it during an anxiety attack.

But most of my many fears point to my fear of being hurt.
Like Im scared of trusting people and stuff..

i'm afraid of being left/leaving again. i'm afraid of watching my friends leave right before my eyes...without seeing or understanding how much it hurts. those last few quick, seconds...and then those long seconds that turn into minutes as i stand alone, staring at the parking lot they left from, waiting for them to come back again...

I want a moment to be real
Want to touch things I don't feel
Want to hold on, and feel I belong
And how can the world want me to change?
They're the ones that stay the same
They don't know me, but I'm still here

I'm afraid of getting old. Terrified actually. Not middle aged. But elderly. My grandmother is 80 and while she's pretty healthy, all of her friends are just dying around her. My grandfather died looong before I was born, all of her siblings died before I was born - her parents are obviously deceased, and she has only one child - my mom. I just couldn't imagine outliving everyone and having to bear with there deaths and the subsequent lonliness.

Also, as much as I deny it - I'm afraid that there's nothing after death. Even though I tell myself that if there is nothing after death than it's not like I'll be around to care anyway - but it's just scary.

Oh, and cicadas. And being murdered.

My biggest fear is life itself. And my parents dying.

I'm claustrophobic.
Maggots.
Being buried alive.
