This is killing me... - March 26th 2010, 07:17 PM

Hey,

So I got myself into a situation. I was going for a walk the other day, and seen one of my neighbours doors wide open.. So I went and looked to see what was up, and it looks like the wind knocked the door in, or someone kicked it in because the bolt on the door frame was on the floor.

It was the part of the house that has tools and stuff. So, I fixed it, and closed the door and locked it. but the people that live there are only there in the summer, andthis was back in january.. but im scared when they get home and notice, and have the police come out that they'll only find my finger prints, and the home owners or their friends or visitors.

So can you please tell me what to do? :S

I don't think they'll be upset about you fixing their door. As long as it was actually broken.. it didn't look like someone had broken in, did it?

Maybe tell your parents that you fixed it? I guess if you think you need some witnesses or something.

I don't see why you wouldn't be fine. They don't typically fingerprint things because someone calls the police about someone fixing their door

Re: This is killing me... - March 26th 2010, 08:29 PM

Well I don't know how wind could pop the door open and send the clip flying...

The home-owners aren't gonna be home until June, and as of now no one knows anything about it. The owners are pretty mean, and hate me cause I speed past their house.. They're always trying to bust me for speeding, or doing donuts and stuff. So I can't approach them about it, and my family doesn't understand they'll be like "why didn't you run home and tell us first?!"

What would the police do if they were called out?

If the they do call the police and you do get questioned just explain the truth, that you saw the door was open so you went and closed it because you knew they weren't there. I don't see why they would call the police though, unless someone had broken in and stolen some of their stuff.. But yeah, you're innocent in this so i wouldn't worry about it.

Just explain to them what happened and I'm sure they will believe you.

Talk to your neighbours when they are back in June, and explain to them what happened.. They should understand.. If you don't want to talk to them, maybe talk to your parents, and they can talk to your neighbour.

And I will take you in my arms, and hold you right where you belong.

Hey there Brendan,

I would approach your neighbours and basically tell them what you have told us about their door. You haven't done anything wrong - infact you may have done them a favour! - so I doubt that they will be angry with you and if it stops you from getting into further trouble, then that's even better. I think that you should simply tell them the truth about what's happened, if the police do get involved, then tell them the truth, too.

Take care.

The only way I could see this going way wrong, is if stuff was stolen. I mean technically you did trespass on private property and even if you were only trying to help that is still illegal. I guess the only thing you can do now is to try and talk to them when they get back. I think it would be best though, if next time when you see someone’s door open and you know the house is vacant at the moment, to call the police and let them handle it. Because if someone had seen you, this could have been much worse.

Tell your parents and your neighbors.

And unless they already have your fingerprints in a police database (i.e. you have committed some other crime so they have your fingerprints on file) then even if they retrieved fingerprints they wouldn't be able to find a match.

Don't worry. You did a nice thing. Just let people know.

Another Idea would be to post a little note through their letter box just saying something like "I noticed your door was broken in so I fixed it for you, hope its ok" and then sign it. That way if they do have a problem with something being stolen they can come and talk to you..

Can't you contact your neighbours and say "Your front door was open, but I've fixed it for you." ?
