Is this appropriate? - April 13th 2010, 03:54 AM

I am a culinary student now (YAY!) and I am in the process of finding a job. I am starting to go to different restaurants that I'm thinking of working at to see if I like the food there, and if the atmosphere is what I'd like to be in. I know that that is all fine and good, but I'm curious... Would it be inappropriate to wear my Culinary School Jacket (It looks like a professional Chef's jacket, but with my school's logo and name on it) when I go there to dine? Make it look like I just came out of school 5 minutes ago or something? My school is known around the city, if not around the country for being one of the best culinary schools (Humber College). So, would this be inappropriate?

Thanks,
Saito

Personally, I wouldn't. Is there a reason you would want to? Here's an example... I'm in karate, and I go and walk around another karate school with my gei on and blackbelt like I own the place. It's sorta like that. It would kind of be pointless to go dine with that on, you know? I don't know if that was a good analogy.

No, that makes sense... But I wasn't going to act like I was a critic, or the restaurant as mine... I was thinking it would have gotten me noticed as a student, and maybe would have opened up an avenue to employment, or at least an interview... But I understand what you mean.

I think it's innappropriate. You should change.

It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around.
And PLEASE don't try and shove it down my throat.

Hey there,

Personally, I wouldn't. I think that Holly's analogy expresses how I feel about the idea, too. I don't think there's any need to wear your culinary jacket when you go to dine in a restaurant. I think it would make you seem somewhat pretentious or like you're a critic, even though that's not your intentions. I'd suggest that you change your clothes - however, it is ultimately up to you what you wear.

Take care.
