Can you translate this (Italian)? -
August 25th 2010, 03:01 AM
So, my great-great grandfather taught me some Italian before he passed away and I absolutely fell in love with the language. I want to learn more than a few simple phrases and words though. Maybe one day.
However, I want to get a tattoo. And I finally decided what I wanted tattooed on my left wrist. Per il l'amaro e la dolce. NOW, if this is written properly, it should be translated into "For the bitter and the sweet". I'd ask a foreign language teacher at my school tomorrow, but they don't offer Italian. /: So if anyone speaks Italian/knows more of the language than I do, is this the proper translation? I'm afraid if I don't ask, I'll get it and it'll say something else... |

i don't speak italian.. but from a bit of googling it came up with 'per l'amaro e il dolce.' which is a bit different.. so.. definitely check with someone who is fluent. i would ask a languages teacher though - often they speak many languages, not just the ones they teach.

I study Italian in college ~ but unfortunately I'm not fluent enough yet to trust myself with translating this compeltely accurately for you. My mum is fluent so I'll give her an ask next time I see her, in the morning. What I do know is while the word 'dolce' can mean sweet, it can also mean 'dessert', although I'm not sure if the noun is masculine or feminine and I've no dictionaries to hand
![]() Even if they don't offer Italian at your school, one or two of the foreign language teachers might still have Italian, or could refer you to someone who does?? It's worth an ask. But fair play on wanting to be completely sure about the translation, it is going to be permanent after all x

I don't speak italian, but for those above, as in other languages the word may seem different when spoken in different ways.
Ie past and present tense and which word order it is. |

Oh and the others were right, it's just 'Per l'amaro,' I think, but you'd want to make sure you can use that word for bitter as a noun and not just an adjective (:

If you translate the Italian to English it is correct. If you then translate the English to Italian it changes and is something else. Maybe try finding an Italian forum and ask people there. |

You don't need to say il before l'amaro, that would be two articles. L' is one already.
Anders: That's not evasive.
Isabela: Look, I didn't get where I am by showing my hand, you know? Anders: No, it's not your hand that I've heard you've been showing... |
