Ok so this is going to sound like a really weird question but I've been thinking about it for a while. Do you think that being able to read music is kind of like a "second language?" And do you think it makes a person more smarter because they can?

I wouldn't go as far to say second language as it's far simpler than another language but I do think it contributes to a person's intelligence.

I do think, when you reach a certain level (like grade 4 or 5 music), it becomes a second language - because by that point, the complexity of the music increases, the placement of notes over chord progressions become more intricate and so on. When you start composing on that level then yeah, it becomes another language, just instead of nouns and verbs and grammar rules you have notes, scales, patterns, progressions etc, each with their own set of rules. (My inner music geek is definitely showing here
)I don't think it really makes you more intelligent though.. yeah, there's a correlation between music and math and it helps to develop that part of your brain.. but other than that, not smarter, just.. different.

I don't know about it being a second language... language is used to communicate with people where as music is just tones/pitches/notes, it communicates sound but not actual words.
Some people can read music and put it to an instrument with ease, while others can look at the notes and actually hear them in their head without putting them to anything physical. I wouldn't say you're smarter because you can read music, you can simply tap that skill (or part of your brain) that's like saying if you're not blind and you can read brail thart you're more intelligent. I think it has more to do with the side or your brain that you're using than intelligence. ![]() "When it comes down to it I let them think what they want, if they care enough to bother with what I do then I'm already better than them." Yes, music is a second language and if you're really good you could communicate
to another musician using instruments. Yes, it makes you smarter when you go down into theory or ear training because it's like math. ![]() [X E R D A J] ♥ ~Sessyrocks~ -=i wanna be your knight=- |
