Fear Of Dying. -
July 14th 2011, 08:34 AM
Lately i have had this really bad fear of dying. I get anxiety thinking about it. Does anyone else have this fear? That you are just afraid to die? I hate thinking about it but sometimes i can't help myself and i get really worked up over it.

When I was younger I was terrified of death and the tought of freaked me out and I used to cry about it and stuff, but now I'm older I like the thought of death... I think I'd rather be scared of it than want it to happen... Xxx

I used to be afriad of death. But now I'm just afraid of how I'm going to die because it's unknown to me. I think lots of people are afraid of death. And I think everyone has their reasons. Its definitely something to think about. That's for sure.

I used to have this really bad, these days I'm a bit more relaxed about it because what happens next interests me. I used to have sleepless nights over it. My heart would beat faster and I'd end up unable to think of anything else. I don't think we're afraid of death, I think people are afraid of what happens in that split second of death and then after it. We fear the unknown.

I can get pretty worked up when thinking about how and when I will die as well. When reality hits me that I will die one day I get stricken with this feeling of doom and really intense depression. I'll start imagining certain scenarios and how awful it would be if I died this way or that way. I don't know why I do it and it happens quite often.
I understand what you are going through, and its not fun... I just try my best to not think about it or occupy myself with something when I do start. Honestly, I don't think its that uncommon to have these feelings though. When reality is a prison, your mind can set you free. |

I'm not going to lie, I'm absolutely terrified of dying. I try not to think about it too much though because if I let myself think about it in too much depth then I end up getting really upset over it. I hate the thought that when you die that's it, there is nothing and you'll never come back. However, I think you just have to try and not think about it too much because life is too short to worry about something that is going to happen to everybody at one point or another. You just have to try and live life to the full and enjoy every single day.

Yup. I was horribly ill this past april/may. Urgent care could not help me, so they sent me by ambulance to the E.R. and the E.R. could not help me, so they admitted me to the hospital. Having to rely on Oxygen for 4 days, and a butt load of medications for two weeks makes the fear of dying much worse.

I have no fear of dying, nor do I have any thoughts on it. Death is as natural as life, and I'd rather spend time enjoying life than waiting for death.

I think most people are afraid of the thought of dieing/death especially when no one knows how they're going to die. I don't really get worked up, but I do get really nervous when I think about it..

Re: Fear Of Dying. -

This fear is absolutely normal. Almost everyone has a fear of death or even how they are going to die. However, death is inevitable. I also have the fear of death issue, but this is what I do. I realize that I want to live a long and happy life. In order to make that happen I take certain health precautions such as exercising, eating right, managing my stress, etc. I realize that unknown things may occur that cause death, but there are some aspects that you can control in order to try and get the maximum life span (like taking care of your body). Death is scary because it is unknown to us. As humans, we fear the unknown, as well as things that we can't control. The trick is to manage the aspects that we can control and try to put to bed the things we can not control. Another thing to realize is that the more time you spend anxious and depressed about death, the more life you miss out on. If I were you, I would develop positive coping skills to deal with the fear, such as keeping a journal. Writing is a great way to release your feelings before they turn into a deep depression.

Like some of the others who've posted, I used to be very afraid of dying. Or, not so much dying, as death. The idea of not being here anymore. I can remember nights where I couldn't sleep, because I was so scared I wouldn't wake up; I can remember, when I was very little, running around the house in tears, until my mother finally asked what was wrong, and I just burst out, 'I don't want to die'.
It's natural to fear death, or dying, since nobody knows for sure what happens when you go. You're definitely not alone in this. Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh, and cruel. But that's why there's us - champions. Doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as though the world is as it should be, to show it what it can be. |

Fear of death is a really common fear, so you're definitely not alone. The thought of dying does scare me from time to time. I think what scares me most is "when" - it freaks me out not to know when it's my time to go. It could be tomorrow, it could be in decades from now when I'm elderly. So, yes, the fact that we can't escape it whenever it comes is very terrifying.
I do try not to worry so much about death though, and enjoy life while I have it.

When I start thinking about how it's inevitable and how there's basically nothing I can do to stop it, I get freaked out.
Replace fear of the unknown with curiosity. That's the main thing that's helped me overcome that particular fear. I don't know what will happen, and we all do die eventually. It'll be okay.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

Re: Fear Of Dying. -

I used to be afraid of dying, and I guess that I still am on an instinctual level. It's hard not to have at least some fear, we've evolved to fear death as a way to preserve our species after all.
Though, aside from that slight, uncontrollable bit of instinct, death does not scare me. I very firmly believe that humans are nothing more than complex biological machines. There is nothing about us that will live on and endure once the machine turns off. To me, death isn't even something I will comprehend, I'll be dead and non-existent before I even know it happened. I will feel nothing, think nothing, know nothing. I won't be at all. And maybe at first that does sound scary, not existing. Think about it though, how can something you will never experience or comprehend be scary? It won't. Hence death is nothing at all to fear. Best to just live your life while you still have it and let death come when it does. ~Cody
