computer game vs. exercise - July 20th 2011, 05:29 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

My mom had a stroke a few months, and since then we were already conscious of what we eat and exercise. I am the type who is very lazy and I am the only robust looking gal in our family, due to unburned fats, and considering I am still in my teens (most often the but of jokes in school). You see I am lazy and I am always at the computer playing computer games. Until my mom threaten to cut off the internet connection until I will be serious with exercise. Nothing to do and nothing to lose if I obey. Now I exercise before I can open my games. That is what it goes in this family. Blackmailing and threatening. Well its kinda funny and weird but I'd rather obey than lose my angry bird game. By the way I am not addicted to playing computer games, I have good grades in school, just that I prioritize it than exercising.

I can understand why you might want to avoid exercise, I'm guilty of this myself. I wouldn't consider this blackmail, you just have to earn your games now instead of being allowed to play them whenever and when you first start doing something that you don't like doing, earning things by exercising seems reasonable to me. Your mom cares about you and is trying to prevent a stroke and other negative health outcomes in your future. I know it's not fun, but you'll adjust.

You're supposed to take regular breaks from the computer, so perhaps every half an hour or so (however often you take breaks) you could do a minute or so of exercise. I do a minute of jumping jacks every so often to loosen myself up if I've been staring at the computer screen for ages, it just makes me feel better.

The thing about exercise, and anything else you don't like, is that the best thing you can do is turn it into a habit. Exercise before using the computer for a week or so and you may find it becoming something you do naturally.

I completely understand you prioritizing games over exercise, and completely understand holding off exercise for as long as you can, as it does seem like a lot of work to go through. However, exercise is one of those things that feels great when you're doing it, and after you're done. Trust me, you'll feel satisfied with yourself once you do it as it's a really healthy thing to do. In fact, (in my opinion at least) it makes games more enjoyable coming off a good strenuous exercise/bath, but that's just me. Your mom also has a point; she just had a stroke, so she doesn't want anything similar to happen to her daughter which is very reasonable. She wants what's best for you.
