Car tax question. - September 29th 2011, 07:25 PM

I'm finally able to put my car on the road and have sorted out the insurance and the MOT, all I need now is the tax. The insurance starts on the 1st October and will pay for tax on that day. Does anyone know if I can start driving straight away? Or do I have to wait for a tax disk to come through? It's not as if I would be driving it without paying tax, it's just come off SORN and it's my first car.

I take it you are doing it online?

I believe that once you have paid for the tax, you can print out the confirmation page and show that to a police officer if you get stopped to prove that the car is taxed. You are usually allowed to do this for up to 10 days after payment, after which time you need to display the disc.

It's up to him/her whether or not to accept it, because ideally you should have a disc. However, as I understand it, the worst they can do is give you is an on-the-spot fine of £30 for non-display (no points).
