Synesthesia -
January 3rd 2012, 12:52 AM
Sooooo... am I posting this is in the right place?
(Intoxication, if this gets moved, it's on you )Sooo.... synesthesia is, according to Wikipedia, is a neurologically based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Basically your senses are crossed. The most common types are grapheme -> color, sound -> color, and ordinal linguistic personification. Grapheme -> color is where the synesthete interprets written information as colored. If it's written in black, he will obviously still see that it is black, but it feels like a color. Sound -> color is something like when voice, music, and assorted environmental sounds such as clattering dishes or dog barks trigger color and firework shapes that arise, move around, and then fade when the sound ends. For some, the stimulus type is limited (e.g., music only, or even just a specific musical key); for others, a wide variety of sounds triggers synesthesia. Ordinal linguistic personification is a form of synesthesia in which ordered sequences, such as ordinal numbers, days, months and letters are associated with personalities. There are others, but those are the most common ones. I have an experience similar to sound -> color, where certain songs and certain voices feel like colors to me. I won't say I have sound -> color, but it's an experience similar to it. I was just wondering, does anybody here actually have synesthesia, or like me, an experience similar to it? I find this soooooooo interesting and I just want to hear your side of it. xx |

I do, but everytime I answer this question I forget what the trigger is, so it's not something that happens daily. It's quite weird when it happens, like why I would associate something with a taste that is purely visual. I think a lot more people do it than they realise.
For example, if you ask people what colour the letter A is, a lot of people reply red. |

I experience sound (mostly anything with a tone) to color as well. When someone would sing, or an instrument was played, I could see a certain, very specific color with it. I took a test on it online, and they confirmed I have like... 94% synesthesia. (Though online tests are a riot, this seemed somewhat legit
)Though my new medicine has diminished it greatly. I used to be able to go on for hours about it, now just thinking about my lost ability and lost love for music is just depressing.

My friend has the colour>taste one! She finds it really quite distressing at times. Deep greens make her feel sick as it reminds her of vomit. I've never experienced it. It does sound very interesting though!

I remember absolutely hating the sound of a banjo, and not being able to explain it to anyone because to me, it was so... puke green

Taste-> color is called lexical-> gustatory. I can't believe I forgot to put that on there.
And wow! This is so cool!! Like I said before, I don't think I have synesthesia per se, rather an experience similar to an experience a sound-> color synesthete would experience. I wanna meet someone who has ordinal linguistic personification. That would be so cool xD

I don't have it but I wish I did.
It sounds really cool.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

Ooooh, how facinating?!
No, I have never experienced this. I did watch a TV show about it AGES ago, a man acociated sound with taste! And the camera men were talking to him, but he was cooking so the smell of cooking, and TASTE of the words made him sick ![]() And a lady SAW words. I'm not sure what she meant but I think as people spoke to her she could see patterns. x |

I don't really have this ~ aalthough I'd love to study it, it sounds amazing ~ but I have something which may be linked to it where everything, to me, has a gender. All the colours, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, letters, etc, have different genders.

I'm not giving you a diagnosis, but that is basically what ordinal linguistic personification is, is giving months, days, numbers, letters and such personalities, or in this case genders.
so cool. so cool so cool so freaking cool.

Today my friends Adam and Chloe were talking. Adam's voice is dark blue. Chloe's voice is reddish pink. I had no idea voices triggered it until today.

My sister's ex boyfriend has it. He would associate music with colours. He could play instruments by looking at colours and paintings; it was strange.
I do associate colours with some days of the week. In my head Wednesday has always been yellow :| I don't know why/how but it just is. Thursday is also green. Monday is red. Edit: Number one is red too. ![]() |

I spent most of the day when I got home from school focusing and listening to music and figuring out what sounds triggered what colors. It was soo cool.
