The Life Of A Cockroach - April 10th 2016, 02:35 AM

I am bloody pissed off, maybe it's part my fault but I'm pissed. My building is infected with cockroaches. When I first moved in it was bad, then it got better. I would see one or two here and there, nothing terrible. Now... My kitchen is. Infested and I can't think about it. They come out at night... I never see them during the day, ever.

Maybe it's from the plastics in my pantry from over the winter. I'll be getting rid of them in the morning. Maybe it's because my counters are dirty and I don't clean them, but I thoroughly clean my kitchen every few days? Oh and I should keep the dog food in something, maybe that's why?

Seriously... I can't handle this. I can't stand them. Talking to my landlord. Monday or Tuesday about this issue. Asking if they do mandatory cockroach treatments every 3 months or something to keep it under control.

Not sure what I'll do in the warmer weather... all of this is disgusting. Ditching shit tomorrow and bleaching my entire kitchen including my floors.

Oh god, that's awful. I'm not sure about what rights you have as a renter but maybe there is somewhere you can look up the laws in your area to see what rights you may have and what the landlord is legally obligated to do. If you have a copy of your lease I'd also scan through that to see if you can find anything. But even if you can't find anything I'd talk to the landlord to see what they suggest.

Maybe while you're waiting on the landlord you can head into the store and see if they have any sprays or repellents for cockroaches. I don't know how much that'd cost though.

I'd keep the dog's food in something, even if it doesn't prevent the cockroaches at least they won't be making their way inside the food.

It is good that you keep everything clean. I don't think a small amount of dirt on your counters would do anything, but I'd clean them anyway. I don't think it's necessarily an issue of how clean you are, because you do seem very sanitary, but I think it's more a matter of the fact that other people in your building have them so they may get in anyway.

I'm definitely not an expert on cockroaches so I don't have any good suggestions but I hope you can get rid of them!

Hey Chantal,
I know the intuitive thing is to spray with repellent but that will make them stronger. I would suggest taking the garbage out as often as possible, especially the bins that you throe away food scraps like the kitchen. Roaches are super smart, it isn't your fault and I don't think it is dirty ness as much as it is them liking certain foods. You're on the right path with sealingthe storage containers and/or replacing them with new ones

Also if there are holes in your walls or under the cabinets or by your sink, I would look into sealing those holes. Roaches like warm water and can live off of drops of water that leak from the sink. They have some amazing survival skills so I can imagine how hard it is keeping them away. My old apartment had roaches for years. The walls were not well made and we had leaks and holes in the ceiling and all sorts of decay problems.

I hope things go well from here. I know it sucks
