Unhappy I'm Pretty Sure I Was Kicked Out Because I'm Autistic - January 14th 2017, 03:40 PM

So I was kicked out of my youth volunteer group because apparently I'm socially innept and now I'm wasting my moms time because she has to tag along. But I don't want my mom to tag along. I just want to learn about nature, and not waste my parents time but I can't even have that.

It just seems like they don't want autistic people in their group because it makes them look bad.

I am still somewhat alive.

Hi there,

I don't think that they would be able to kick you out because you're autistic. I believe that could be considered discrimination. I'm not American so I don't have much information on the policies down there, but I did find this link that explains things that might help you a bit more then I can. I would also recommend getting your mom to speak to your Youth Volunteer Group Leader to see why exactly you're not allowed in the group. Here's the link I was talking about. Let me know what ends up happening and if the site helps at all.

Stay strong,
Brittany

They basically talked about how I made the group look bad and that I'm too socially inept to handle being in the group-

I would highly recommend seeing if your mom, you and the leader could sit down without the others there, and discuss this in private. There might be something else going on with this that they are not mentioning.

The tricky thing about the discrimination laws is that they can be easily worked around. They can't force you out for being autistic, but they can do so if behaviors that result from your autism cause serious problems (mostly safety concerns) or somehow prevent others in the group from being able to participate in activities. That means that if an organization really wants to get rid of you because of this, it's relatively easy as long as they don't admit it's because of your disability. I think you and your parents have a decision to make. Do you really want to be part of a group that doesn't want you (regardless of why), or is this worth fighting for? If it creates more of a general problem though, that might be something to work on. I say find out what they're real reasons are and then see if it's something specific to this group, or if it's something that would cause you problems in other types of groups as well. If not, see if you can find a more accepting one.

Hey there,

So it against the rules to kick you out for being autistic, unless you are disturbing or interrupting the learning of someone else. You said that they said you're not socially able to handle the group and that a realistic reason and they had the right to do that. Because you might be disrupting the learning of other kids, who knows.

My advice is try and find a group for people who have social problems or have learning disabilities so that you can fit in and enjoy the group.

I hoped this helped.

Frankie

As Brittany suggested, are you able to sit down with the leader and your parents to have a discussion over what the real reason behind you being kicked out is? If you are able to and you find out it is from you being autistic or even from behaviours stemming from you being autistic, then I don't think it would be a good group to even be a part of if they care about their image so much that they refuse to take autistic people.

Are there any other groups you can try and find that would do similar things? Or even different things that you are still interested in and would still give you the opportunity to learn about nature. It's always better to try and find a more accepting group that isn't quite as good, than a group that won't accept you that teaches slightly better.

I hope it all gets sorted out.
