I put some clothes up for sale and got a ton of hate - March 12th 2017, 05:34 AM

So I live near this sports store thats well known, but its not a franchise, its the only one that exists. Earlier this month they started a massive sale on all old stock, everything was 50% off. I knew for a fact that I could instantly sell some of these things for full street price online. So I buy most of the basketball shoes they have, 11 pairs, and there are only 4 pairs left now. A somewhat important fact is that they are old models and will not be restocked, once they're gone, they're gone. So I go online to some forums based around basketball shoes and make a post saying what shoes I have and how much I'm selling them for. For the first 3 hours everything goes fine and I sell some. Then some random guy who knows about the sale asks me why I'm selling for full price and goes on to tell everyone in the thread that they are half off at the store. All of a sudden he gets support from pretty much everybody and everybody is soooo pissed at me for taking advantage of a one time only sale by trying to make a profit. I am literally only making $40 and they are making such a big deal out of it. Like they're not buying because I'm asking too much, they're not buying completely because of the fact that I would make money off of it. They act as if they can get these for the sale price, like I'm some kind of scammer for trying to get double what they're worth. It's absolutely ridiculous, I've posted on 4 different forums and every time somebody calls me out. I just need to sell a few more and I'm done but these pricks keep obstructing me from doing so.

I think I understand why the guy went off at you, because you're selling them at full price. Have the clothes been used before or are they brand new? If they are brand new, selling them for a bit cheaper is understandable, but if they've been worn before, you sell them at half priced.

Have you tried selling them on a different website?

Use Kijiji.

But also, I totally understand why people are pissed. It might seem unkind to call you a scammer, but you can't deny that by deciding to take advantage of the situation to make some money for yourself is really opportunistic when you could have found other ways to make money that wouldn't be taking advantage of people and denying them the opportunity to get the sale. People will understandably be pissed about that. It's a very self serving endeavour, that's all.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, especially cause I know people do stuff like this all the time and it doesn't make you a bad person per se, but I do think it is realistic to be honest about why you're making the choice and the motivation behind it.

They are brand new and still have the tags. And as I said I posted on 4 different sites, every single time some different person called me out. I really don't get what their problem is. I have already proven that people are willing to pay what I want and they really need to mind their own business. If I was able to block them I would get right on that. These particular shoes happen to be specially made for players in the NBA and were actually going to be used in games, so they aren't available to the public which makes them more valuable. As for right now I'm just planning on holding them until the store is all out, then the pricks that keep calling me out won't have the excuse that they're half price at the store.

Re: I put some clothes up for sale and got a ton of hate - March 21st 2017, 09:40 PM

I'm a member of a bunch of garage sale groups in surrounding cities, and a lot of people have clothing items listed for about 25% off.

Around Christmas a lot of people freaked because people were selling 'hatchimals' for at least $100 when they were around $40 I believe to buy.

So I agree with Delwen, maybe try lowering the price a bit more?
