Mice? - November 20th 2019, 11:28 PM

I really feel stupid for posting this but I'm at the end of my limits now. Does anyone have experience of getting rid of mice?

Theres a mouse at home that's decided to make its home in my bedroom. I'm not scared of mice in general but honestly its starting to really mess with my head. I'm so scared of waking up and finding it on me and I'm terrified by the noises they make...scratching in the walls and climbing over carrier bags and squeaking. It's all irrational but I'm at the point now where I'm constantly looking and listening for it. Even when I'm out, I hear a noise and my head thinks mouse. I'm not sleeping and its really affecting me, which I know is pathetic but I cant help it.

We've tried luring it into a jar with food, we have a few traps set in the spots i hear noises from. I've even tried peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils to keep them away. I dont have the money for pest control or exterminators, and it's a really cramped flat with a lot of hiding spots, so it's hard to monitor it.

If you have anything I can try please let me know. I feel like I'm going crazy.

Hello Hollie,

I am so sorry about this and I hope that you will be okay soon. Are you able to buy mouse poison from a grocery store or another store? It goes for $3.50 and up on the area that you live in. If you can get some of this, put it in different areas of you're house and they will eat it and then die in a few days. They will take it to however many are in you're house. So however many you have, they all will eat it because they will think that it is food. It can take up to about 5 days for that to happen. Also if you have other pets in you're house, put it somewhere that they are not able to get it and eat it.

If you are able to try and find the spot that they came in from and try to block it so that they cannot come back. I hope that you will be okay soon and I will wish you the best with this. Sending you lots of hugs to help.

Hey Hollie,

I do understand the annoyance with dealing with mice. Even though they aren't scary, they can still be pests and nothing worse when you are trying to sleep but get woken up by the scratching and rummaging sounds made by the mouse. This happened to us a few years back, so I feel your pain!

Firstly, make sure that you don't have any food or leftovers lying around, and that all food/snacks, are kept stored away. Empty bins regularly too.

It's good that you have some traps down. Do you notice any droppings anywhere? It can be difficult to say with accuracy where the mice are, even when you hear the noises so looking for droppings may help as you'll know where else to put the traps.

Not sure what traps you have, but we had a box type one (they could go in but not get back out) and we put a chocolate biscuit in the trap. It worked quite well. If you do catch mice, be sure to take them far away, perhaps into a wooded area, and release them, so that they will find it difficult to get back.

Alternatively, putting down repellent/poison could work.

Just keep being persistent. It took a long time for us to get rid of our mice (we had a lot more than one!) but it worked and we haven't seen a mouse in years.

I think Emma gave a pretty good suggestion, and I would like to add that make sure you vent your area so you and anyone else don't get sick from inhaling the poison. I wish you the best of luck with this.
