...Wisdom teeth. -

Has anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
....I'm so nervous, I was at the dentist/ Oral surgeron the other day && he said that he would have to remove my wisdom teeth. He reassured me that everything would be fine and that I wouldn't remember anything because I would be under IV sedation. .....I am terrified of needles :/ Ugh.. This sucks :/ But I know I need them taken out beecsue they are painful. So, any tips on how I should prepare? |

I've had all 4 removed in the same appointment, and all they gave me was a simple injected numbing agent to my jaws...even with that minor anesthesia, I only felt some major discomfort, but not a lot of pain. You're going to have IV sedation, so you'll be much better off; probably won't even feel a thing.
![]() When the procedure is over, you'll have cotton balls in your mouth (or rolled up gauze) and will have to replace them every time they completely saturate with blood (there likely will be much of it). You want to do this over a bathroom sink. And when you eat (several hours after the procedure, at the least), make sure it's all liquids or semi-solids -- like jello, pudding, etc. Hard food that requires chewing will be very uncomfortable. Depending on how your procedure goes, your dentist might recommend that you swish salt water in your mouth (to help prevent infection in the incisions), but only after the bleeding starts to go down a bit. There isn't too much you can do for preparation; just make sure to get a lot of rest after the procedure is finished -- you will recover much faster. Good luck! I got all 4 of mine removed 2 weeks ago. I don't remember a darned thing, not even the drive there or the drive back. My stitches have all fallen out, and I can eat everything except gummies.
I don't remember the needle at all. My mom says that I winced, but didn't pull away from the needle. Don't worry about it. You'll do fine. |

Hey. =)
I got mine taken out about two weeks ago(I think?), and you'll be nervous beforehand, but after you'll think yourself silly for worrying. They'll probably give you medicine to take the night before and the morning of, it pretty much makes you loopy without a care in the world. I'm not comfortable with needles either, I do remember them putting the IV in(they put it on my hand) but I promise that it isn't anything more than a pinch. I probably only felt it because I watched them put it in. When you leave you'll probably be high and not able to walk(that was fun, I remember about four or five minutes after the surgery before I fell back asleep on the car ride home). After the surgery they will want you to start with drinking water, then something like milk, then soft foods like bread. I'd suggest eating them even if you don't want to, you probably won't feel hungry but you can't take the pain meds until you've eaten something. If they numb your mouth, it's supposed to stay numb for six to twelve hours(mine was numb for about eight) and as soon as it starts to tingle, take the pain meds. It only hurts for the first day really, and if you take the medicine it won't hurt bad(they should give you or whomever drives you the instructions on when to take what). I was off the pain medicine after two or three days and advil was fine, I hardly needed that. Most of the swelling will go away in about a week if you keep ice packs on it in the beginning to keep it down in the first place. And the stitches will probably be ones that will dissolve after about ten or fifteen days.Good luck!
