I hate when people/users/etc.... - November 9th 2011, 07:35 PM

I really hate when people IRL as well as on here say "I have *insert mental illness or physical illness here* but I was never diagnosed"
If you weren't diagnosed, then don't say you have it! You might, but diagnosing yourself is just stupid. It really pisses me off when people do this. Especially with certain illnesses that I won't name. Gah. I just needed to rant.

"'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.'
I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish.
'Yes,' she said simply, 'I do know. I've watched you, Colie. You walk around like a dog waiting to be kicked. And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.'
'No one deserves to be kicked,' I said.
'I disagree,' she said flatly. 'You do if you don't think you're worth any better...'"

Agreed! Some people just let their imaginations go wild and read information online. This is one REALLY bad thing about the internet haha.

I partially agree with you, but I'm also guilty of this. I was officially diagnosed with depression by my doctor about two months ago. I know I've had the symptoms for 10 years. I experienced the symptoms, did the research from reliable sources and got my degree in psychology. Saying that I wasn't diagnosed was a formality because I couldn't claim to have something that wasn't "official" not everyone who says that is making it up or pulling random conditions out of nowhere. They are really struggling with something either way and it's no different than saying "I think I have..." whatever.

I hate this too, although I am also guilty of it. I have had the symptoms of depression for 6 years, but was only diagnosed 2 and a half years ago. Also, my social worker seems to be convinced that I have borderline personality disorder and is trying to get me into the relevant treatment for it, although I have not been told by a doctor that I have been officially diagnosed with it (however, I did see it mentioned on my GP notes), so I'm still unsure of whether or not I have it.
But it does annoy me when people say "I did this online test and it says I have X, Y and Z..." because obviously the internet cannot diagnose you.
Just as an example, I just did a few online screening tests and the results suggest that I have: OCD, Bipolar Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Eating Disorder, Schizophrenia and Depression. Now, obviously I don't have most of these and the only one which I have been diagnosed with is Depression.
Self diagnosis is just silly.

I know what you mean. For some reason I hate it when people say they have depression when they're upset about something. You can BE depressed, but that doesn't mean you have depression. I also see this a lot with eating disorders. People say, "I didn't eat today...does that mean I'm anorexic?" without realizing that anorexia needs to be diagnosed.

Guilty of this somewhat too, but i agree with you. For me, I was diagnosed with an Eating Disorder the first time I went though counseling, probably my junior year. And I recovered through that. Now, I'm almost starting to think I'm slipping back into it. Do I have a proper ED? I'm not sure. All I know is that i know the signs, and I know my body. I remeber what the doctor told me, etc. Also, having done a lot of research on the topic, I'm a wealth of knowledge on Eating Disorders. (Not saying I can diagnose myself).

I get where you're coming from. A lot of people are mis informed on things. Whether it be from the internet or a friend. They think they can self diagnose on the internet because there are articles and websites that claim to be written/owned by licensed doctors. But with the internet, you simply can't know for sure. I think you can diagnose yourself with say, an infection from a cut. I mean, it's not good.. but simple things like that, to me, are okay. But things that could seriously affect you (not saying an infection can't) it's best to see a doctor.

If we sucessfully diagnosed ourselves, we'd all be doctors.
