Driving - November 30th 2011, 02:21 AM

I recently got my dream car. Well, my dream car is a manual. Keep in mind I wanted a manual. I took two manual driving lessons and did pretty well.
This car has more power than any car I've ever driven (besides this one car I test drove once) and it's so difficult to drive as a manual!! My problem is starting. I either stall or lurch the car which is pretty frustrating and embarrassing.
Don't get me wrong. I love my car and I love driving manuals as I long as I have the hang of them.
I'm starting to feel quite dejected since I can't drive it nearly as well as I thought I was going to. I've had the car less than a week.
I will get this right? I don't know, I think I just need some encouragement. :| Any tips or really anything at all would be lovely.

Hey Kitty.

You've had the car less than a week. In my experience, that's not long enough to get used to it. Give yourself time. I know that when I first started learning how to drive, I couldn't get the hang of actually starting the car. I'd over-rev it, or under-rev it, and it would lurch or bunny-hop or just stall. I frequently was at the point of tears, that's how frustrating it was. But the more I practised, the better I got - well, obviously. My point is, don't let it get you down. Try going to a quiet spot - I used to use a deserted car park - and just practise starting, going a few metres, then stopping, and doing it again. You'll get the hang of it - so what if it takes you a little longer to adjust than you thought it would? As long as you keep working at it, it will get easier, until one day starting the car will become like second nature to you, and you'll wonder how you ever had trouble with it.

I hope I helped.

Nothing in the world is
the way it ought to be.
It's harsh, and cruel.

But that's why there's us - champions.
Doesn't matter where we come from,
what we've done or suffered,
or even if we make a difference.

We live as though the
world is as it should be,
to show it what it can be.

I completely agree with this. Although you took some classes on how to drive manual, you aren't used to your new car yet. Just give it some time, I'm sure you'll get better at it the more you drive it. Maybe sometime you could go to an empty parking lot and just practice for a bit? I know a couple friends to learned to drive a manual did that and it helped them.

It definitely just takes practice. I'm learning to drive at the moment and actually getting the car started is definitely the hardest part, after that it all comes easy. It'll get easier and soon you'll be able to do it without thinking!

Give yourself time, it took me a few weeks to be able to fully drive my car (its quite old compared to the brand new car i'd took lessons in) so i was exactly the same
Just keep practising, you'll get the hang of it eventually!

Every car that's manual is different, so don't be discouraged. You'll get the hang of it

I do tend to get quite impatient with myself if I can't get it right the first time. Yeah, starting the car is my problem. I can switch gears while driving, downshift, slow down, etc. I took my car out in my neighborhood today and I managed to start smoothly except for twice when I lurched and stalled. The open road is a lot harder though cause there's other cars. Thank you though. You did help. It's nice to know that I'm not the only person struggling with this.

When I took lessons taught by my friend, I drove his old truck and then his Hummer. My car has a lot more horsepower, so it's a lot harder to get started when driving. I took it around the neighborhood, but I'm hoping to take it to the elementary school parking lot this weekend when no one is there. Thanks!

Yeah, getting the car started is for sure the hardest part cause you have to get the clutch and acceleration just right. Thanks

Thank you. Yeah, I'm the same way. I've driven other manuals, but this one is a lot harder.
