Nobody's in the Christmas spirit this year - December 3rd 2011, 02:33 AM

Well, I guess the title explains it all. I think that all of the big stores and everything are over marketing Christmas, advertising all of the new gadgets and toys months before November even hits, let alone December, playing nothing but Christmas songs starting in November, etc. I don't know, it's got my immediate family in a mood, maybe because our financial situation isn't the best, I don't really know. All I know is that really, nobody's in the spirit. It's the second of December, and usually by now I would have been nagging my mom to put up the Christmas tree and decorations, but this year I don't care when we put them up as long as it's before Christmas vacation. And then the tree will probably be taken down right after Christmas, it's been getting taken down sooner and sooner every year. My mom even admitted that she's not in the spirit anymore. I've noticed that as I get older and older I care less and less about Christmas, and then when the holiday finally gets here I open gifts, have a family meal, and then we go our separate ways, leaving me to think "Oh, that's it?" In years' past, we've gone over my aunt's house but it's gotten really crowded over there with all our family, so it's too noisy and stressful to bother going. I don't know, have you noticed yourself getting less enthusiastic about the holidays as you get older? Do you think that Christmas is being over marketed? Or is all this just me? I guess it feels weird to have nobody in my house really any excited over Christmas. It's so different.

Its definitely being over marketed. Most advertisements are based off the holidays somehow by now in hopes that their products will become presents under the tree. Christmas is about spending time with family and the warmth it brings, not just buying presents. I think with the whole economy situation as well, its bringing down the spirit this year.

I have noticed more and more people in a "Oh no, it is christmas time" type of mood. But i think it has a large part in the fact that the economy is crap and hardly anyone has a job or a vehicle or even a house and it seems silly to worry about a tree and decorations if you don't have the things needed to get all the Holiday stuff.

Yeah, I remember when I was littler we used to get up super early to open the presents and then we sat around for a while eating some of the candy in our stockings before we had to go to my aunt's to spend some time, and I'd always wear one of my brand new outfits over there. Now I just get up whenever and they're usually awake by that time and we open gifts and go on our merry way. If people stopped advertising and worrying about getting the best gifts, maybe everything would be a bit better.

I agree. I used to be excited about Christmas, but now I'm just stressed about what to get people and how it won't be good enough.

I've never celebrated Christmas, but I did notice this year how soon the music was put on and how Thanksgiving (which I enjoy a tad more) was largely ignored.

Yeah, I agree. My friends ask me what I want for Christmas and I always say nothing or feel bad when they do get me something because I've never had money to get them anything in return so I feel like such a bad friend. And yeah, Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday and it didn't get as much excitement.

I don't think it has anything to do with being over-marketed. That very same over-marketing was probably what got you so excited when you were younger.

It's been underwhelming for a few years now, last year especially. When you're older, for some, the magic dies, and that's okay. It doesn't have anything to do with outside influences for me - it's just that the promise of presents isn't something that gets me giddy anymore, and as you grow up, it's okay to not get excited over something which is largely child-orientated. I still love the literature of Christmas and hearing Christmas songs (especially Fairytale of New York), but you have to look for new ways to enjoy it now that you're growing up.

Yeah, but everything was a bit better off when I was younger, and I was little so I didn't really worry about the economy. But like you I do like hearing the Christmas songs, just not played constantly over the radio, I like hearing them on my own time and around Christmas vacation.

Part of the reason I haven't really asked for anything this year is cuz I understand how much money we don't have. Not so much an economy thing; more a working class thing. I'm happier knowing we're living comfortably, rather than spending on superficial gifts. I'd like Christmas to be a day where the three of us can sit down, and not have to worry about doing anything else for once. That sounds ideal to me.

I think that I would really like that as well. I'd like to spend Christmas sitting in the living room with my family watching Christmas movies, but sadly my mother probably wouldn't keep ABC Family on all day watching them with me.

Blah, I know what you mean. Christmas just isn't Christmassy this year. We haven't even put up our tree yet and it's midway through December. :/ I'm not fussed about presents or anything, I just want people to be happy. Unfortunately it's just not happening, I guess.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

I'm not really as much into this year either. I don't really know why. I did a few things like making my Teenhelp stuff Christmas like, but that's about it. I usually love Christmas music and sing them all the time and they just bug this year. People around me are like this to. It's weird.
I hope you get in the spirit soon!

It's the same for me too. My dad is HUGE on the Christmassy stuff as well and even he isn't in the spirit as much as he usually is. And I'm just not into it at all. I know what I'm getting for Christmas, so I'm thinking "Just give me my presents and get it over with."

I also used to count down to Christmas and make candies and all that stuff. Now I'm thinking, "Wow eleven days to Christmas already?" and I'm buying all my candies as well.

Yeah, I get you there. We used to decorate loads and stuff but not anymore, and then as for the presents thing, I get you. I want mostly clothes so I picked out some of my gifts.

Same here with the picking stuff out. I wanted a new MP3 player and I actually picked it out, but my mom paid for it and said that was one of my Christmas presents and it was the same with my Kindle I'm getting.

I have definatly noticed that as you get older the christmas spirit goes away! Because when your little you wait up trying to hear santa, make sure the milk is in the best mug,and that snata gets the best cookies! when santa isn't there anymore you don't really feel the excitment! I just started feeling the excitment again because I stopped and took the time to realize that at this time of year we wouldn't have christmas If we didn't have easter beacause, God blessed Mary with a perfect baby to be born into the world just to die! God sacraficed Jesus so we can live and go to heaven and just not die but have eternal life! The more and more I think about jesus being born to die for me and you the more excited I become about christmas! I hope it gets better for you God bless and merry christmas!
