Here is a picture I took of a spider on my back porch. I used the macro setting on my Digital SLR camera.

LOL, the spider wasn't that big. I just got a close-up picture. It was probably approx. a centimeter long or so. Not big at all.

Great shot! I absolutely love shooting macro, but my SLR can't get this much magnification.
What settings are you using, if I may ask?

Great start!
Here's a few tips: 1) Use a flash. The pop-up is ok (I think you used it), best is an external flash ~$70 with sync cord mounted off to one side. It'll make the spider "pop." 2) Interesting backgrounds are interesting. 3) Stop down as much as possible. Shoot ISO 400 or 800 with f/8 to f/16 if possible. 4) Have fun! 5) I'm a wimp for not having the courage to do what you do! I'll stick to chipmunks thank you. ![]() |

Plus, I know how to take photos, seeing as I did take photography for 2 years in high school, as well as KNOWING how to use depth-of-field, the focus settings, etc. However, the spider was on the top of the canopy out back, thus there was no "interesting background", just the sky. |

Didn't say you didn't. It's a good shot and better than most of the macros I've done. But we can all improve and a thread without constructive criticism is useless. A lot of photographers would choose a wide aperture for separation between subject and background, as is often appropriate in wildlife photography. It usually looks awful in macro, however. And I saw the EXIF that said you used f/11 or something...I guess the spider must be smaller than I imagined.

![]() Ugh my mom was a biology major in Arizona and always tells me about the scorpions, tarantulas, wolf spiders, etc. there. Gross. ![]() Biggest I've seen was a wolf spider about 3 inches long in the HS cafeteria, scared me half to death. Also, black widows on the back of a steel rifle target, absolutely horrifying. And of course, the big, hairy, water-walking "dock spiders" up north. Eww. |
