STOP the extradition of Richard O'Dwyer to the USA - June 25th 2012, 02:35 PM

http://www.change.org/petitions/ukho...oih_LgPfpFGulw

I almost never advertise these petitions. This is something I feel strongly enough about to do that.

The US film industry are now fucking with the British legal system... with an obvious intention of "making an example" of this guy. I think it's sick and they should go screw themselves in the ass with pneumatic power drill.

All this action is purely to defend private interests of some corporations in the US... and our government wants to comply? Right...

Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

In the interests of providing context, the full text of the judgment authorising extradition is available here. (It's only 9 pages, in case anyone's wondering)

While I sympathise with O'Dwyer and his family insomuch as this is causing a lot of anxiety and distress, I cannot say I find myself particularly sympathetic towards his situation - or, more specifically, the reason he has been charged. From the text of the judgment, it is apparent that the website he created (TVShack) was not merely a search engine as he alleged but emphasised and encouraged its users to follow the links to pirated material as opposed to the usual, legal methods. The website so much as said:

If that isn't aiding and abetting an offence, then quite honestly I'm not sure what is. The impression I get from the judgment is not only that the defendant knew exactly what he was doing, but was quite happy doing it until the police arrested him. In light of this, I do not feel it would be an injustice for him to be extradited and stand trial based on his actions -and let's be clear about this, that is all that will immediately result of this. He has not been tried in absentia and his rights violated. It's the same as in the Julian Assange case, on which I hold a similar opinion (as did the UK's Supreme Court, incidentally). As such, while I have some sympathy as stated above, I am afraid I will not be signing this petition.

What offends me the most is how the US thinks they can drag our citizens over to their country to stand trial to a crime that was committed in our own country. I think that's bullshit.

Yes... charge him, fine him, maybe even a year or two in prison at most... but do it in the UK.

The other thing that offends me is that they're making an example of him. He doesn't deserve any bigger punishment than any other person who's into this business.
