American captain rescued, pirates killed, U.S. official says - April 12th 2009, 06:00 PM

An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a U.S. Navy operation that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, a senior U.S. intelligence official said.

One of the pirates was wounded and in custody after a swift firefight, the official said.

Capt. Richard Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vermont, was safely transported to a

Navy warship nearby.
The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

I'm really really glad to hear this. From all I've heard, the captain offered himself up to the pirates to free the rest of the crew, and I'm very glad to see that he's going to soon be back home.

It's about time. I'm getting pretty sick of the navies of most of the superpowers of the world getting humiliated by these pirates.

Searching my heart for its true sorrow,
This is the thing I find it to be:
That I am weary of words and people,
Sick of the city, wanting the sea;

Wanting the sticky, salty sweetness
Of the strong wind and shattered spray;
Wanting the loud sound and the soft sound
Of the big surf that breaks all day.

Pirates... hmm... I thought they were only in movies up until a couple of years ago. Who would want to be a pirate????? I think it would be a terribly lifestyle.

And what a horrible experience for that poor captain!

Well, the country isn't exactly very wealthy, so pirating and wanting randsom or taking the cargo is a source of income. It may not be the most honourable, but you got to get money and goods somehow. I think they have done this to other countries but the US was the first or among the first to retaliate.

It's not them waking up or going to high school and thinking "YARGG, I wanna be a pirate", it's that they don't have a lot of other successful choices.

I was real glad to hear this. That man surrendered himself to the pirates in order to save his crew; he's a true hero. Go SEALs!

Somalia is one of the most unstable nations in the world, and there is almost no central government. A huge majority of its population live in poverty, so piracy makes sense. Pirates come back to their homes and spend the money they made from ransoms, and the entire community benefits in some way. It's hard to really give credit to the pirates, but it must also be understood that these crimes are done out of desparation.

This is a good thing sort of, but really highlights the problem between first world and third world countries. Oh well...
