Not going to lie, that's just weird. Really don't know what more I can find to say.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

If he said yes, she said yes, court said yes, then go for it. Although, I wonder what she'll tell the kids, that their father is her son?

she's not taking them to have his babies, i presume. So what is she going to do, just wait until she bumps into a lady in the supermarket and ask her on a date on her sons bahalf before dropping this bombshell on the poor woman or advertise it in the weekend newspaper? Wanted: women to carry dead sons baby.

yeah.. dont really know what her intentions are, slightly disturbing if you ask me. People do weird things when they are grieving.. maybe this is just an irrational decision made on that basis.

Strangely enough I don't find anything wrong with this. So she wants a grandchild, big deal. He agreed to it, she agreed to it and she'll probably pay for a surrogate mother or something to carry the child for her.

She'll probably go to an agency that provides surrogates.

I don't know what to think of this either. She's acting upon her grief and it's debatable whether it's healthy for her, however, I do understand that the thought of having a "part" of her son with her may seem consoling in a way.

I see nothing wrong with this at all, I would want the same thing done on my behalf if I were to die suddenly. Carry on the line, my DNA.

Well if the son wanted it doing and the courts allowed it then I don't really see a problem.

The term harvesting does slightly creep me out though, it reminds me of something off a horror movie =/

But did he want it? It said he wanted to have children some day, not that he wanted sperm harvested out of his dead body and put into a surogate.

I don't know, I wouldn't want to try to stop her...but really, I wouldn't want to be conceived solely as a memorial to my already dead father.

So why don't they harvest any of the other things? Like some organs? That could maybe help more than just her family line?

They did. The doctors took out all the viable organs for donation, but weren't sure about the legality of the sperm, so they want to court to make sure it was alright.

As a mother of a boy, I can honestly say that IF that was my child, and IF he had talked about someday wanting children of his own I'd probably do the same thing that mother did.

A part of her son will live on, In the lovely gift of another life. The way it came about was rather... odd. But honestly I think she did a great thing, for her and her son.

I think you're looking at it all wrong darling.. The children wont be conceived just as a memorial to their father.. But to honor his wishes, and his love that he had for them. While it is sad that they wont know their daddy, at least they will know grandma, and grandma can tell them great stories about him and give them love.

I don't really see the issue? I think it's great if she can keep his legacy living somehow and he always wanted kids so why not?

People grant weird final wishes all the time, what's different about this? The son wanted kids, he had names picked out for 3 sons, and his mother knew that. So she did what she had to, to see that happen for him.

Uhh did he actually consent to this? I don't think he did, and if not, the sperm should be destroyed. I want kids someday but if I died I would not want my mom to take my eggs to produce herself a grandbaby. Also, he probably wanted sons to have the experience of being a father, not as some egotistical wish to continue his DNA line.

I don't really think this is wrong, like others have said her son agreed so I guess it's okay. But it seems like the children would just be bought into the world to help the mother get over the death of her son and it's that that I have some issues with.

That is a bit harsh, dear.

She is obviously distraught over her son's death. I only hope that he rests in peace.

I think this is just weird. And no where did it say the son gave permission for this, but that the mother had told them to do it, because she thought her son would want that.

I think its kind of creepy but if thats what she wants to do, go for it. I didnt even know post-mortem sperm was still fertile or whatever after the person died O.o

I like how everyone jumps to the conclusion that since he wanted to be a father, he clearly must have consented (or would have consented) to posthumously fathering a child.

I love children, around them every day and one day i want a big family of my own. But, if i were to very tragically and unfortunatly die before i got a chance to do that, i would not want my eggs taken to make MY children, if I was not around to raise them.

ps - i really really really really really hope i dont die now that i posted that ^

Really, imagine how it must feel like to be a grandchild, growing up knowing that your dad gave his DNA to you AFTER he died... I'm sorry but I think that's really weird.

And he never consented, he was a bit dead when the decision was made.

its strange but i guess theres nothing really wrong with it. im just not sure if the guys mother is thinking about how her grandchildren are gonna feel later on about this. i mean its not just her trying to heal her heart shes dealing with other lives and maybe shes not thinking about her future grandchildren and how life will be for them it just seems a little selfish to me.

I could understand if it was his wife, or something, but his mom?
I mean, what is she going to do with her dead son's sperm?
Impregnate herself with it and then have his incestuous posthumous child?

I smell decades of therapy ahead of that poor child.

Really, imagine how it must feel like to be a grandchild, growing up knowing that your dad gave his DNA to you AFTER he died... I'm sorry but I think that's really weird.
Yeah, that's the part that's a little weird.
While I don't see anything wrong with it morally, I think that it's a little strange. Not to be rude or anything, but that's a little to extreme. Okay, you lost your kid, it's sad and hard on you, but do you honestly need to go this far, seriously? It's a bit stupid in
my opinion. Not only because the kid is going to be majorly confused about this, but also because a mom has no business giving birth to her kids own would-be kid. A bit gross, when you think about it.

I honestly see no problem with this, no oddity about it. She wants grandchildren? So? As long as she doesn't carry her son's baby, there's no problem. Use a surrogate mother? It makes the most sense, and it's legal.

The whole situation is, is she doing this for herself or for her son?

If she's doing it for herself, it's wrong. If she's doing it for her son, it's not.

I wouldn't see anything wrong with it if it were clear that this is what the son wanted, but I just don't see that.

Does it matter what the son would have wanted? He's dead, he's got no use for his sperm so let the mother use it as she will.

So basically, if a person writes a will or makes a request, we should tear it up and make our own decisions. The person's dead, they're not going to care. If a person requests to be buried, we should take it upon ourselves to cremate them - they won't care. If they want their children to go to an aunt, we should be able to send them to a stranger instead.

Yeah but with a will the alive people would care, with a cremation the alive people would care. If the son had said "I will my sperm to my beloved girlfriend Kitty (or whatever) so she can have our son like she's always wanted" then I'd have a problem with the mother taking it for her own selfish ends but he didn't. Basically a will is based on reliance, there is no reliance here. All the parrallels you are drawing here require someone to make a statement on what they want to happen to their body/property, there is no statement here. However, as nobody but the mother cares I don't see why it should be anybody but hers buisness.
