UK economy returns to growth - October 25th 2012, 07:03 PM

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20086872

I think that we still have a long way to go - especially in terms of unemployment - but at least there's some good news.

What do you think? Will GDP continue to grow? Or is this mostly down to the Olympics?

(Only reason I ask is because I have to write a report about young people's views on the current economic situation and how it effects them.)

A lot of it is probably to do with the Olympics, but hopefully the news encourages spending in the run up to Christmas to keep us in the green.

Based purely on my own experience of the Games (particularly volunteering at the Paralympics) I'd say a large chunk of this was down to the Olympics and the Paralympics. Holding back the ticket sale figures until that quarter will have made an impact especially, to say nothing of the hospitality & security requirements. I'd like to think this is the start of an upward trend, but in all honesty I've seen little to convince me we are about to turn the corner - for one thing, it flies in the face of conventional economics that enforced austerity leads to growth. Not sure why it's taking politicians so long to cotton onto this, but such is life...
